Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews’ Battle With CIRS And Long-COVID Continues To Delay His Return

Toews and former North Dakota teammate T.J. Oshie received alcohol-related penalties for being minors in a Grand Forks, North Dakota tavern.

Despite struggling with CIRS and long-term COVID-19 symptoms, Jonathan Toews has not given up hope and announced that he will start playing soon!

Former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is focusing on his health and well-being, ensuring speedy recovery and restarting his NHL career.

As of now, he is chronicling his health recovery journey on Instagram.

Highlights

  • Jonathan Toews has had a successful NHL career.
  • In 2021, Toews announced he was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). Later, he also shared about suffering from long-term COVID symptoms.
  • He believes that Ayurvedic treatment, especially Panchakarma detox, helped him regain his health.

Moreover, Toews’ recent post regarding Ayurvedic treatment has garnered significant attention from the public.

Moreover, Toews has spoken positively of the treatment, highlighting the significance of addressing mental, emotional, and physical wellness.

Before The Illness, Jonathan Toews Had A Glorious NHL Career!

Canadian professional ice hockey center Jonathan Toews swiftly rose to prominence in the NHL.

His unwavering passion, dedication, and athletic prowess earned him numerous praises, admirations, and accolades during his 15-season career.

Moreover, Toews earned the moniker Captain Serious. In 2006, the Chicago Blackhawks selected him as the third overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft, commencing his career as a professional ice hockey player.

His remarkable performance in his debut season, which earned him a nomination for the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year, demonstrates his devotion to the sport.

Likewise, Toews was the second-youngest captain in NHL history (after Sidney Crosby) at the time.

Furthermore, the promising NHL star has bagged three Stanley Cups (2010, 2013, 2015) and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2010.

Toews earned gold medals with Team Canada in the 2005 U-17 Challenge, the 2006 and 2007 World Juniors, the 2007 World Championships, and the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.

Then, in 2017, he became one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players. Therefore, all these victories and achievements showcase his glorious NHL career and athleticism.

Despite The Illness, Toews Did Not Give Up And Tried Giving His Best Performance!

While Toews had become unstoppable, his health suddenly started deteriorating, substantially impacting his flourishing career.

On December 29, 2020, the Blackhawks announced that Toews would be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an inexplicable illness.

This announcement was made just before the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season.

However, the star missed the entire season before announcing in June 2021 that he was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS).

He promised to return for the 2021–22 season. Then, in September 2021, he revealed having COVID-19 at some point during the previous season after conducting an antibody test.

Nevertheless, on March 31, 2022, Toews played his 1000th NHL match against the Florida Panthers.

Even though he never lost hope, he experienced a career-low 37 points owing to his deteriorating health.

However, he maintained a 57% faceoff win rate, which was third-best in the NHL among centers with at least 1000 faceoff draws.

Hence, Toews made a commendable comeback during the first half of the 2022–23 season, scoring 14 goals and 28 assists for 28 points in 46 appearances.

Unfortunately, his health worsened midway through the season, forcing him to miss several weeks.

On February 19, 2023, he disclosed that he was still experiencing long-term COVID and CIRS symptoms, specifying no date for his comeback, stating:

Nonetheless, Toews did not step back and returned to the Blackhawks lineup after a two-month hiatus, facing the New Jersey Devils.

Sadly, on April 13, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson stated that Toews would not be re-signed when his contract expired after the season.

Despite all of this, the NHL star declared that he would not retire from the NHL. Instead, he intended to prioritize his health in the 2023-24 season.

Jonathan Toews Has Made Several People Aware of the Benefits Of Ayurvedic Medicine Practices

GQ recently released a piece on December 29, 2024, detailing Toews’ efforts to enhance his health and overall well-being.

During the interview, he mentioned that he decided to try an unconventional remedy: a five-week Ayurvedic treatment in India in 2023.

According to Toews, he had explored different treatments and therapies for his health issues. However, nothing worked until he tried the Ayurvedic approach.

The Ayurvedic treatment was life-changing for him, involving herbal medicines, deepana (rekindling digestion), enemas with herbal concoctions, yoga, meditation, and other practices.

While he has regained his strength and energy, he has not played hockey since then as he continues to focus on his recovery.

His exposure to Ayurvedic treatment began after working with an Ayurvedic practitioner who suggested dietary changes and herbal tinctures to help with inflammation and digestion.

Moreover, the practitioner recommended a Panchakarma detox at an Ayurvedic retreat in Kerala, India.

Despite his initial skepticism, Toews pursued the treatment after noticing significant improvements from the dietary adjustments and herbal infusions.

Please go on a podcast and share your experience!! I’d love to hear it!

Healing is a lifelong journey. My daughter went through CIRS and black mold disease, will live with mold “awareness” and avoidance for rhe rest of her life. But she made the deep journey and did the hard work to gain her life, happiness and better health back. Congratulations to you for driving this recovery effort.

‘The Panchakarma program is a traditional Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation process.

During the treatment, Toews had ghee butter consumption, enemas, induced vomiting, massages, and mud baths.

Disconnecting from technology and modern life was also crucial for his healing journey.

“There’s no WiFi on the whole property, except for in their little office where people go in there and check messages and stuff. I’m not going to lie, I turned my phone on here and there. But you try not to, and I think that part of the healing process is just not being distracted and really kind of sitting with whatever’s coming up. I think that’s a huge part of it, and, for me, one of the most powerful things I realized about going over there is, again, not just being immersed in a whole totally different culture and way of life with people that think completely different than you and were raised different, but also just being disconnected from your own world and not having anything pulling you back into your old patterns.”
“And it’s not a fun process, obviously. No one really wants to sit there with all the bullshit coming up, right? But at the same time, I would say it’s a big part of it, and I didn’t realize how important it was until I got there and I was really kind of going through it. But yeah, I wasn’t on my phone much.”

Furthermore, he shared about other alternative therapies like ozone therapy and plasmapheresis.

Despite spending money on these treatments, Toews did not find them as effective as the Panchakarma program.

Therefore, the NHL star has realized the importance of the mind, emotions, and energy alongside physical health.

Now, Jonathan Toews prefers the holistic approach of the Panchakarma program over other therapies.
