Troy Selwood always had the support of his three brothers, Adam, Joel, and Scott, who are also well-known figures in the Australian Football League (AFL) community.
Troy was an Australian rules footballer and played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions in the AFL. Unfortunately, he passed away on February 4, 2025.

Sandhurst Football Netball Club recruited him as the number 19 pick in the 2002 AFL Draft. He debuted for the Brisbane Lions against St Kilda in Round 1, 2005.
Due to his stamina and accountable style of play, he was mainly used as a tagging player on significant opposing players. However, the Lions delisted him at the end of the season after Round 21 of the 2010 season.
He was rumored to return to his home state of Victoria on October 1, 2010, and join Geelong Football Club to resurrect his AFL career.
Troy hoped to play for the AFL in the 2012 season but was appointed co-captain of the Geelong VFL side at the beginning of the 2011 season.
On September 23, 2012, he led the Geelong Cats’ VFL side to a premiership at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne and retired from VFL football at the end of the 2013 season.

They hold the AFL/VFL record for most games played by brothers with 786, between Troy’s 75 matches and the efforts of Joel (355), Adam (187), and Scott (169).

The Selwood family surpassed the mark of the famous Daniher family (752) late in Joel’s career.
Troy’s twin brother, Adam Murray Selwood, was recruited from Bendigo Pioneers as the West Coast Eagles’ third pick in the 2002 AFL Draft. He played for the Eagles from 2003 to 2013.
Adam was known for his toughness and versatility and was a key player in the Eagles’ 2006 premiership-winning team. He played 187 AFL games during his career and before retiring.
Similarly, Troy’s younger brother, Joel Anthony Selwood, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation.
He is among the AFL’s most decorated players, known for his leadership, courage, and consistency.
Geelong Football Club drafted him with their first selection in the 2006 AFL Draft, and he played for the Geelong Cats from 2007 to 2022.
Moreover, he captained Geelong from 2012 until his retirement. He was a six-time All-Australian and has won four AFL premierships with Geelong in 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2022.
Furthermore, Troy’s younger brother, Scott Francis Selwood, joined Geelong in 2016 and played alongside his brother Joel before retiring in 2019.
Previously, he played for the West Coast Eagles from 2008 to 2015. He was a reliable midfielder known for his strong defensive skills and work ethic and won the Eagles’ Club Champion award in 2012.

Troy was a much loved and loving member of our family. Over the course of his life, Troy bought joy and light to all who knew him. He was a loving son of Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel and Scott, and a doting father of beautiful children Tom and Sadie.
The Selwood family will miss Troy’s humor, bravery, deep thinking, love, and compassion.
They are grateful to all those who have supported him throughout his life. However, they requested privacy and respect during this harrowing time as they process their devastating loss.
Although Troy never talked about his wife, he had two children, Tom and Sadie.
Furthermore, Troy was a beloved figure, and many mourned his tragic loss.
The news today has had a deep impact on many current and former players and staff. Troy had a great spirit and energy and was someone who always cared about others. He had a passion for working with young people and helping them achieve their dreams of playing elite football.
