Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs Locker Room Affected By Flu Outbreak Ahead Of Super Bowl

Andy Reid left Arrowhead Stadium and was transported to a local hospital after feeling ill during the team's September 2021 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Andy Reid dealt a significant blow-ahead of the Super Bowl as several players suffered from illness.

Reid’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, entered Super Bowl LIX with history on their mind.

Highlights

  • Andy Reid and his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, lost the match against the Philadelphia Eagles with a 40-22 score.
  • Reid said that defensive tackle Fabien Lovett had to leave practice on Friday, February 7, 2025, due to an illness.
  • Andy was hospitalized and treated for dehydration in 2021.

A win over the Philadelphia Eagles would have made the Chiefs the first team in the modern era to win three straight titles.

Despite a potentially historic game, the Chiefs lost to the Eagles 40-22. After this brutal loss, the Chiefs are returning to the drawing board.

Following the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke on the loss for Kansas City. He said,

“We’ll learn from this,”

Despite the unfortunate finish from Kansas City, they have secured five AFC Championship Game victories over the past six years.

The Chiefs struggled on both ends of the field. Their offense finished the night with 275 yards on 12 first-down conversions and 5.6 yards per play.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted three touchdowns, two interceptions, and 257 yards while completing 21-of-32 pass attempts.

Before the Super Bowl, the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans in the Divisional and the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

The Eagles capped off their season with an 18-3 record, including a playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, and Kansas City Chiefs.

Andy Reid Confirmed That The Kansas City Chiefs’ Player Dealt With A Flu

The Kansas City Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles for the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

However, the flu spread around the host city, and the Kansas City locker room was affected before the NFL blockbuster event.

According to ESPN, many Chiefs players had the flu this week. This comes after Reid confirmed practice squad defensive tackle Fabien Lovett had to leave practice on Friday, February 7, 2025, due to an illness.

Due to illness, the Chiefs placed Matt Araiza on the injury list earlier this week. However, he was ultimately cleared to compete against the Eagles.

Philadelphia’s players also dealt with the same issue before the Super Bowl.

Jalen Carter was a limited participant in Philly’s practice on Wednesday as he battled the flu.

Chiefs’ Coach Andy Reid Was Taken To Hospital For Dehydration In 2021

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid left Arrowhead Stadium and was transported to a local hospital after feeling ill during the team’s September 2021 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Reid was treated for dehydration, but the Chiefs didn’t specify what was wrong with Reid, only saying that he “felt ill.” The team said the coach is “doing well, currently resting, and in stable condition.”

He stayed on the sideline until the end of the Chiefs’ 30-24 loss and returned to the locker room.

Reid addressed the team as usual after the game, and at least one player, running back Clyde, said he was unaware of anything unusual.

However, Reid felt ill and departed for further evaluation at the University of Kansas Health System.

A source close to Reid told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington that the coach was in good spirits when he went for precautionary observation after he felt ill.

The source also told Darlington that Reid had left in an ambulance less than an hour after the game ended.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu tweeted about Reid after the game, saying,

“I’m praying for my Head Coach & I’m hoping you can send up prayers with me!! One of the best men & teachers I’ve been around!!! GOD please show us your mercy!”
