Jordan Chiles’s Olympic Bronze Medal Was Taken Away And Relocated To Another Opponent, Ana Maria Bărbosu
In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Jordan Chiles competed on all four apparatuses during the qualification round.
She ended the day ranked fourth overall and placed fourth on vault. However, she did not advance because Biles and Sunisa Lee were placed higher and were from the same team as Jordan, Team America.
In the gymnast all-around final, there is a maximum limit of two athletes from the same nation competing.
Furthermore, Chiles managed to go to compete in the floor exercise final. Initially, her score was not high enough to earn a medal. Later, her coach, Cécile Canqueteau-Landi, submitted an inquiry on Chiles’ D-score.
The inquiry was eventually accepted when Jordan Chiles’s score was revised, placing her third highest in the event final. The gymnast won her bronze medal in the Olympic finals.
However, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation later appealed the decision change to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
They claimed that the Chiles coach’s inquiry was submitted past the one-minute deadline. Similarly, CAS rules that the inquiry was four seconds over the allowed time, in one minute four seasons.
Following the CAS decision, the International Gymnastics Federation reinstated Jordan’s score, placing her in fifth place. It retained Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu in third place and Sabrina Voinea in fourth.
Moreover, on August 11, the International Olympic Committee announced that the Bronze medal in the floor exercise would be reallocated to Bărbosu and taken away from Jordan Chiles.
