Wrestling Coach Louis Kimmel Buterbaugh Found Solace In Partner Betty Calhoun After First Wife Barbara Sharon Passed Away

Kim was a passionate outdoorsman who loved fly fishing. He cherished his trips to Canada with his father and extended family.

Louis Kimmel “Kim” Buterbaugh, 80, of Bedford, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, surrounded by the love of his partner, Betty Calhoun.

Before moving to Shippensburg High School, Kim began his professional journey as a teacher and wrestling coach in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

There, he helped several athletes reach the state championship level.

Later, Kim shifted careers to become a State Farm Insurance agent in Duncansville, where he dedicated 23 years before retiring.

Kim completed his education at Bedford High School in 1962 and excelled in sports like football, wrestling, and track and field.

He then pursued a bachelor’s degree in education at Florida State University, graduating in 1966.

Louis Kimmel Buterbaugh Was Married To First Wife, Barbara Sharon

On August 21, 1965, Kim wed Barbara Sharon (Miller) Buterbaugh, who passed away on July 22, 2019.

He leaves behind three children: Chad Buterbaugh, Johanna Kelly, South Carolina, and Jerrod Buterbaugh.

His eldest son, Chad Buterbaugh, married Lynne and resided in Duncansville; Johanna Kelly married Chris and dwelt in Greer, South Carolina, and Jerrod Buterbaugh hitched Denise in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Kim was a loving grandfather to six grandchildren: Chloe Hawk, Sarah Nestor (Luke), Patrick Kelly, Christopher Kelly, Sam Buterbaugh, and Max Buterbaugh, and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his life partner, Betty Calhoun, his two siblings, Owen Buterbaugh (Karen) of New Paris and Neal Buterbaugh (Linda) of Bedford, his dear niece, Paula Henry (Brian) of Johnstown, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He appreciated reading and history and strongly supported Bedford High School’s athletics and music programs.

The wrestling coach was also a dedicated member and former president of the Blair Regional YMCA.

He was actively involved with Bedford United Methodist Church, where he sang in a worship band at Hollidaysburg United Methodist Church.

  • Louis Kimmel Buterbaugh’s memorial service is set for October 31, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Bedford.

  • Born in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Ernest and Nancy Mae (Hughes) Buterbaugh.
