While his family enjoyed their time overseas, Steve wasn’t always thrilled by the trips since he would miss out on basketball camps and other events.
In 1982, his father, Malcolm Kerr, became the president of the American University of Beirut (AUB), just as Lebanon was in the midst of a civil war.
In her memoir, Steve’s sister, Susan, recalled that their father had told her there was a real chance he wouldn’t make it through the war.
Steve, who had stayed in the U.S., visited his parents in Beirut in December 1983, just after starting college at the University of Arizona.

Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, shared that his 90-year-old mother, Ann, was among those forced to evacuate due to the devastating wildfire in the Los Angeles area.
The fire affected thousands of residents and reached the suburbs, prompting evacuation orders, including for Pacific Palisades, where Kerr’s mother lives.
In a post-game interview following the Warriors’ 114-98 loss to Miami, Kerr expressed his thoughts and condolences to those impacted by the fire.
He mentioned that his mom had to leave her home in Pacific Palisades because of the evacuation orders.
Kerr also spoke about Everett Dayton, a Warriors’ player development staff member whose family lost their home in the same region.

The wildfire, fueled by strong winds, spread rapidly through the hillsides of Southern California, including the picturesque Pacific Palisades area, which is about 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
Pacific Palisades, bordered by Malibu and nestled against the Santa Monica Mountains, is known for its steep, winding roads and homes perched along hillsides with views of the Pacific Ocean.
Kerr noted the heartbreaking and frightening scenes unfolding in the area and reminded everyone that the tragedy outweighed the game.

In 1984, Steve Kerr’s life was tragically changed when his father, Malcolm Kerr, was assassinated.
Malcolm was shot twice in the back of the head as he stepped out of an elevator at his office at the American University of Beirut.

The gunmen fled the scene, and a militant group known as Islamic Holy War took responsibility for the killing, citing their opposition to the American influence in Lebanon at the time.
At the time, Steve was just 18-year-old, a freshman at the University of Arizona.
He received the devastating news late one night from a family friend who was also a vice president at AUB.
Steve’s mother, Ann, remarried in 2008 and now goes by Ann Kerr-Adams.
She has continued her career at UCLA, where she serves as the coordinator of the Fulbright Program, and she remains a trustee emerita at AUB.
Ann is also an accomplished author, having written books and articles on the Middle East.
