Giornata 13 Review

Another Giornata in the books, and what an array of exciting matches Serie A had to offer. From the Derby Della Lanterna to the battle in the capital, there was excitement all over Italy. We also got some surprising results in Napoli and Udin that shook up the Calcio world.

Milan @Lazio: 1-1

One of the more exciting matches of the Giornata. For Gerardo Gattuso And AC Milan, staying fit has been a struggle on its own, yet Milan has still fought all season. Lazio jumped out the gun early, as they seemed to be the strong team in the match. Franck Kessie got a goal off a deflection from Lazio’s defender Wallace to put them up 1-0. Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi was criticized for subbing out Alberto and Milinkovic-Savic for the second half when the attack was playing well. His decision paid off as Joaquin Correa got the game equalizer in the 95th minute.

Milian: Vs. Parma

Lazio: @Chievo

Sampdoria @Genoa: 1-1

The Derby Della Lanterna would be an epic battle between both clubs of Genoa. Sampdoria would start off fast, as the ageless wonder Fabio Quagliarella notched in a set piece goal in the eighth minute that would put Samp up. After that, it would be Genoa who would play better of the two clubs, with their Polish striker Krzysztof Piátek playing better after the international break. Piátek would equalize in the 17th minute, with a PK goal.  Genoa would generate more opportunities then Samp but unfortunately couldn’t get the win.

Up next-

Sampdoria: Vs. Bologna

Genoa: @Torino

SPAL @Juventus: 0-2

Unfortunately for SPAL they ran into the mighty Juventus and did not have an answer for Juve. Although Juve gave them opportunities, SPAL could not capitalize. Allegri went with a 4-4-2 for Juve which was interesting, but adds a bonafide option for the attack, especially in Serie A play, putting the physical yet lethal strikers in Ronaldo and Mandzukic up top makes it tough for most Serie clubs to stop. Ronaldo and Mandzukic would be the goal scorers in this match.

Up next-

SPAL: Vs. Empoli

Juventus: @Fiorentina

Frosinone @Inter: 0-3

For Inter an International break came at the right time, coming off a humiliating 4-1 loss against Atalanta. Inter would bounce back against Frosinone, it would all come on the feet of Keita Balde, Who would notch a brace. Inter would dominate all phases of this match from start to finish, which is why one has to question putting Mauro Icardi Being subbed in, he played significant minutes for Argentina, plus Inter has Champions league ahead of them. Lautaro Martinez would also notch a goal in the 57th minute.

Up next-

Frosinone: Vs. Cagliari

Inter: @Roma

Chievo @Napoli: 0-0

One of the surprise results of the Giornata. For Napoli it wasn’t the worst possible result, but when you’re in a league sitting in second trying to chase Juventus, every win matters. For Chievo it was the start of their third manager this season, after former Italian National team Manager, Gian Piero Ventura resigned as Chievo manager after 4 matches. Domenico Di Carlo would be the new manager, a manager that saved Chievo from relegation a decade ago. Napoli had plenty of opportunities and chances to win but simply it was not their night.

Up next-

Chievo: Vs. Lazio

Napoli: @Atalanta

Roma @Udinese: 0-1

This was the biggest surprise of the Giornata. For Roma’s Eusebio Di Francesco, the seat is now raising its heat level. Another lower tier club has found a way to beat Roma. For Udinese, they would also present a new manager on their sideline. Former Udin Manager Julio Velazquez would be sacked. In came Davide Nico to manage the club. Di Francesco rested some players ahead of champions league this week, which could go to haunt Roma. Roma was the team to dominate the stat sheet as well, the difference for Udinese was Rodrigo De Paul.  Udinese Goalie Juan Musso had an impressive match with nine saves, holding the three points for Udinese.

Up next-

Roma: Vs. Inter

Udinese: @Sassuolo

Atalanta @Empoli: 2-3

One of the more exciting matches of the Giornata featured one of the hottest teams in the last month, Atalanta is coming fresh off the big win against Inter and we’re hoping to continue their streak. Unfortunately, Empoli had other plans, in the 84th minute, a red card was handed to Atalanta’s Josip Lilcic. After a back forth battle, Empoli had enough to get the win in the 92nd minute from a Matias Silvestre header, finishing the upset. For Empoli, they now have back to back wins for the first time this season.

Up next-

Atalanta: Vs. Napoli

Empoli: @Lazio

Fiorentina @Bologna: 0-0

With Sunday’s result, it marked the fifth consecutive match in which Fiorentina drew. Goal scoring has been an issue for the team, only scoring seven goals in its last eight matches, even their opponent Bologna has scored more goals in eight matches. As many shots Fiorentina took, nothing would go in. For Bologna, Inzaghi must change something as they are getting comfortable in relegation.

Up next:

Fiorentina: Vs. Juventus

Bologna: @Sampdoria

Sassuolo @Parma: 1-2

Don’t look now but Parma is sitting in Europa League spot and is trending upwards. Gervinho would get the goal scoring started, tapping in a goal in the 6th minute. Gervinho is starting to heat it up again and has been the difference for them. In the 25th minute, Bruno Alves would add another goal. For Sassuolo they just couldn’t get a goal, they only got a PK in the 36th minute by Khouma Babacar, but could not find the net again.

Up next-

Sassuolo: Vs. Udinese

Parma: @Milan

Torino @Cagliari: 0-0

The last match of the Giornata was probably the least entertaining of the matches. For Torino they would be playing with heavy hearts, as their manager Walter Mazzarri suffered a mini-stroke and sat out this match as a precaution, his return to the sideline is week by week. The match, however, would be a battle, with Torino getting the better opportunities but yet still could not complete a win.

Up next-

Torino: Vs. Genoa

Cagliari: @Frosinone

The battle to try and catch Juve continues. Serie A continues to give us some exciting soccer to watch and next Giornata should be the same. For Juve, Napoli, Roma, & Inter Champions League continues. With another exciting round of Giornata, with the premier match being Inter at Roma.
