Bayern Munich has reportedly opted against securing a permanent deal for Joao Cancelo when his loan agreement expires this summer. According to Calciomercato via The Mail, the 28-year-old full-back had been a significant player for Manchester City in the previous seasons, but he unexpectedly joined Bayern in January.
Although Cancelo began his time in Germany with promising performances, providing assists in his first two games, his situation has deteriorated, with him being left out of Bayern’s starting lineup against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. The defender has only started in two Bundesliga games, and it seems he will not extend his stay in Germany beyond this season.
Despite the supposed £62 million purchase option clause in the loan agreement, Bayern has chosen to pass on the opportunity to keep the Portugal international. Cancelo will now return to Manchester City. However, according to the report, both Chelsea and Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest in the full-back who initially signed with Manchester City in 2019 from Juventus.
