It’s time for the first installment of the “Whitecaps Weekly Wednesday Mailbag.” I put the call out and there seems to be some interest on Twitter in asking questions. So what I will try and do every week is take your questions on Tuesday and Wednesday morning and get the answers. This will be an article every week devoted to you, the Whitecaps fans!

I am not going to answer ridiculous questions, which should be obvious. But if you have a legitimate question I will do my best to squeeze it in every week. For the first Mailbag, I got a great variety of questions about players, tactics, and everything in between. Let’s get to your questions!

There were lots of questions to choose from and because I only have so much time and words, I will try and keep it around 10 questions from Twitter. I am also going to make it very easy for everyone to navigate as every question will be a subheading that you can click on right at the top of the article. Only want to see certain questions? Perfect! I have you covered. Want to scroll through everything, go right ahead.

Will The Whitecaps Play 3 At The Back

Vanni Sartini has made it very clear from the start of the year that he wants to play 3 at the back. It gives the team more options for attacking and moving forward and they can deploy their Wingbacks to track back and cover the outside. It is a lot of running for players like Cristian Dajome, Javain Brown, Marcus Godinho, and company but besides the first match against the Columbus Crew, they have shown they can cover the ground.

When asked about using 12 different starting lineups in his 12 matches as a head coach Vanni Sartini spoke about wanting competition within the squad, “The more we play, hopefully, the more we find kind of a consistent solution but at the same time, I would be very disappointed if I have to play the same lineup every time. I like that the players challenge me, showing up in training and [being] good enough to make me rethink the lineup, that will be the case for this week.”

Expectations For The Whitecaps 2022 Season

Expectations For The Whitecaps 2022 Season

I said at the beginning of the season that I think this team can contend for a home playoff spot. That is the top 4 in the Western Conference of course and I think they still can get to that 4 spot. Right now the MLS Western Conference is pretty wide open with Vancouver sitting in the 13th spot with 4 points after 6 matches. LAFC is at the top of the west with 13 points and Nashville is setting the playoff bar at 10 points.

Vancouver has 27 matches remaining and after this stretch, on the road, they are home for most of May. If they are able to steal a couple of road points against CF Montreal, Austin FC, and Seattle they could set themselves up to make a nice push at home. The Whitecaps also end their season with 7 of the last 12 at home. In the end, if the Caps can make BC place a fortress they will make the playoffs. What they do on the road will determine what seed they are.

What’s With The Whitecaps Sleepy Starts

What’s With The Whitecaps Sleepy Starts

A great question and one that was brought to Vanni Sartini Wednesday afternoon. The team has not been the best out of the gate, only scoring 2 first-half goals through 6 matches. Vancouver can be at their best with the lead and the ability to open up their opponent and expose them on the counter to tack on one or two more goals. That can’t happen without the lead early.

“It’s actually a good question because, you know, we’ll fly to Montreal tomorrow. And they always find that when we disrupt our routine and we don’t fly the day before the game and we have to train in their facility. We’re not 100% So to be honest, we work a lot on readiness. We worked a lot on tactics today and yesterday and the next two days will be more kind of competition training fast. Very intense. With I want to raise that kind of intensity because we need to be very, very, very woke I would say from minute one.”

Hopefully, the travel to Montreal and the 12:00 Pm PST start will wake the Whitecaps up to start the match.

What Is The Status Of Erik Godoy

What Is The Status Of Erik Godoy

Erik Godoy has been a mystery since he joined the Whitecaps with just 30 appearances since 2020. He has dealt with a myriad of injuries but looks to be close to form. I asked Vanni Sartini about his status for this week against CF Montreal. Vanni said he would be playing this week, but not for the first team.

“The plan is actually if everything goes well. It will be played with [the] second team in Seattle on Sunday. So that’s a huge one of the huge things why we are very happy to have a second team now. So he will do that will be a test for him. And if he can play a significant amount of minutes with the second team and next week he will be an option for the game.”

Caio Alexandre Will be 7-8 Weeks Away

Caio Alexandre Will Be 7-8 Weeks Away

Tough news Wednesday morning as the Whitecaps announced that Caio Alexandre had broken his hand and would be out for 8 weeks. It’s terrible for Caio who was very close to getting back on the pitch for the Whitecaps. He trained in a limited capacity last week. It didn’t seem to damper his spirits as Vanni Sartini spoke about Wednesday.

“Yeah, it’s very sad the fact that Caio [Alexandre} got another injury and he got the foot broken last year. He was coming back and then the setback again is going to take him off for some weeks. He is a top guy that is a fantastic guy and is so upbeat and he’s so positive that he’s going. So I talk with him today say hey, don’t get yourself down because the time will come I know and this and he has this great quality that he always faces life with a smile and with a positive attitude. So if we will need eight weeks on paper to come back with him. We know that it’s going to be seven weeks because that’s how he is.”

Are Reinforcements On The Way

Are Reinforcements On The Way

I think you answered your own question as the legendary Tom Bogert reported Wednesday that the Whitecaps were interested in Andres Cubas. The Paraguayan could be a nice fit in the midfield especially with Caio Alexandre out for 7-8 weeks.

Are Reinforcements On The Way

The Whitecaps had no comment on the transfer rumors but when Tom hit something it usually sticks. We shall see if he joins Vancouver and what the possible contract and compensation could be. I asked the Whitecaps about the rumors but didn’t get any comment.

We Want The Fun Stuff

We Want The Fun Stuff

Ask and you shall receive. Ranko Veselinovic was happy to answer some fun questions. Sean also asked about Cannoli earlier but I don’t know if he will like Ranko’s answer.

Ranko Veselinovic’s answers to the same questions:
Best Locker Room Music? Bryan White
Favorite Car? Mercedes GLE
The Best Cannoli in Vancouver? I don’t know the third, I don’t eat Cannoli

Best And Worst Dressed In The Press Box

Best And Worst Dressed In The Press Box

Really Andy? You are going to have me throw my colleagues under the bus on my first Whitecaps Weekly Wednesday Mailbag? Okay, here we go…

Har Journalist is always the best dressed in media and a close second goes to Gemma Karstens-Smith. The worst dressed, and he has earned it, would probably be JJ Adams. Note that he does ride a motorcycle to work so he is way more badass than I ever will. Also, I just had him on the 90 + Podcast so I won’t need him as a guest for a while and won’t see him until May 8th.
