Whitecaps 2022 Training Camp

Vancouver Whitecaps 2022 Training Camp: A Busy Time On and Off The Pitch

The Vancouver Whitecaps 2022 Training Camp is in full swing. A busy time for the squad on and off after the pitch after an exciting end to the 2021 season. There have been expected and unexpected changes to the Whitecaps squad. Players like Andy Rose and Jasser Khmiri were moved on, while Tristan Blackmon was brought in to solidify the backfield.

Vancouver would make some tough decisions on Janio Bikel and Theo Bair and watch Maxime Crepeau force a trade to LAFC with seemingly no bad blood. Players were brought in on trials and were sent back to their respective squad while new pieces were added ahead of the San Diego Training Camp.

In case you have missed any of the offseason news, don’t worry because I will get you caught up right here.

The Big News: Maxime Crepeau

It came out of nowhere for Vancouver Whitecaps fans and supporters when it was first rumored that Maxime Crepeau was seeking a trade out of Vancouver. When the news finally broke it was disappointing but there were no hard feelings towards the 2021 Whitecaps Most Valuable Player.

The Whitecaps acquired a whole bunch of MLS “Funny Money” from LAFC in exchange for their star Keeper. Vancouver will receive $250k in General Allocation Money in 2022 and 2023 and $500k GAM between 2023-2025. The Whitecaps also receive a 2025 1st round MLS SuperDraft pick and will retain a fee if Crepeau is transferred.

Will Maxime Crepeau Be The Piece The Whitecaps Miss In 2022?

It is still unclear as to why Maxime requested a move out of Vancouver. There were reports that a contract extension was coming his way after two solid seasons. The Team was very quiet on the situation and all we can do is hope everything is well with Max and his family and wish him the best down in LA.

Evan Newton

Max wasn’t the only keeper to get out of Vancouver in training camp. Evan Newton also requested a move and was loaned out to USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive FC until the end of the 2022 season. Axel Schuster spoke on the move and about the team being on the lookout for another keeper. “This is a good fit for Evan and the club… We are in the process of targeting a goalkeeper to round out our group.”

Can Thomas Hasal Be The Next Whitecaps Keeper?

This leaves the door wide open for Thomas Hasal to pick up where he did in the Orlando Bubble after the injury to Maxime Crepeau. The young Canadian from Saskatchewan seems ready to take the next step after all of his hard work with goalkeepers coach Youssef Dahha. Waiting in the wings will be Isaac Boehmer and Max Anchor who will try and push Hasal internally.

Check out the interview with Thomas Hasal on Episode 59 of the 90 + Podcast as we find out if he is ready to take the Whitecaps net.

The Transfers, Loans, Sales and Departures

Axel Schuster spoke before the season about the new acquisitions being the players who didn’t see the pitch or were limited last season. Caio Alexandre and Pedro Vite were two of the names to come up. Simon Becher, the Whitecaps MLS Superdraft pick looks to stick around for at least training camp. Trialist, Tosaint Ricketts hasn’t looked out of place and could provide depth with some of the other moves.

Janio Bikel

A staple in the midfield under Marc Dos Santos, Janio Bikel seemed to fall out of favor with Vanni Sartini as the season progressed. He had also expressed an interest in taking his talents to Erope and that is just what he will do for the 2022 season. The Whitecaps loaned Bikel out to LR Vicenza in the Italian Serie B. The move comes with an option to purchase at the end of the year.

Theo Bair Couldn’t Find A Place

After showing promising improvements in the 2021 offseason, Theo Bair was loaned out to Norwegian side Hamarkameratene for the season to get more minutes on the pitch. He was able to net 4 goals in his 18 appearances for Ham-Kam.

With a full bevy of striker options, the Whitecaps decided to Transfer Theo Bair to St Johnstone FC in the Scottish Premiership. Vancouver will retain a percentage of the fee if Bair is sold to another club in the future.

Andy Rose The Newest Sounders Coach

A veteran presence to the Whitecaps squad and jack of all trades as he moved to CB. Andy Rose is taking his talents to Seattle but will roam the touchline as a member of the Sounders coaching staff. Rose will join Brian Schmetzer’s staff as an Assistant Coach after spending time in the 2021 season with the Whitecaps U-19 team.

Bruno Gaspar

Another name that Vancouver moved on from was Bruno Gaspar who made 12 starts in 2021. He was also a fixture for the new Gaffer starting 9 of the last 13 matches and was named to MLS Team Of The Week in Week 32.

Re-signings, Re-ups, and A Chance At More Time

Despite moving on from players before the start of the 2022 season. The Vancouver Whitecaps also made some moves to solidify their roster.

Brian White

“That he’s the 3rd best domestic goal scorer, we haven’t expected that but of course are always if someone overperforms our expectations.” Axel Schuster said about the Vancouver Whitecaps latest extension. Brian White was locked up long-term on Thursday, February 3rd, to a 4-year extension that locks him up until 2025 with a club option for the 2026 season.

Whitecaps Lock Up Brian White Longterm

White was rewarded for his breakout season of 12 goals and 6 assists with stability. It is very clear he enjoys playing with Ryan Gauld and the two players showed a tonne of chemistry. There was a question if there was too much number 9 for the Whitecaps with both White and Lucas Cavallini but a 3-4-1-2 formation would allow both players to feed off of each other and benifit from their Scottish set up man.

Javain Brown The Jamaican International

The Whitecaps 2021 MLS SuperDraft pick showed an example all year why anyone can make an impact. Not only was he able to make 20 starts and 27 appeareances for the Whitecaps he added 5 assists from a mostly defending role. Brown was also called up and became a fixture on the Jamaizi National Team during World Cup Qualifying.

MLS SuperDraft Pick Simon Becher

The Whitecaps watched one of their Super Draft Picks from 2021 become an intergral part of the team. Vancouver selected 5 players in the 2022 draft including Simon Becher,16th overall with their 1st pick. Becher has a nose for the net potting 14 goals and adding 10 assists for the Saint Louis Bilikens.

They also selected Midfielders Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador, Giovanni Aguilar, Vitor Dias and froward Theo Collomb.

Sebastian Berhalter From The Columbus Crew

Vancouver added to their midfield right before heading down to San Diego as the team announced it had made a trade with the Columbus Crew. The Crew receive $50, 000 in General Alloation Money in 2022 with another possible $50, 000 if he meets performance bonuses. The son of US Mens National Soccer team head coach Greg Berhalter, made 18 appearances on loan with Austin FC in the 2021 season. He joined the team down in San Diego for Training on February 7th.
