Whitecaps vs Sounders Decision Day

Whitecaps vs Sounders Decision Day Preview: An Important Match For Both Sides Playoff Implications

It all comes down to Sunday for the Whitecaps vs Sounders Decision Day matchup! A win or a draw and Vancouver can punch their ticket into the playoffs for the first time since 2017. It won’t be easy, as the Sounders will be fighting for that 1st seed in the Western Conference Standings.

The Vancouver crowd will be the largest of the season as the team announced over 22,000 tickets sold for the 3:00 pm PST match at BC Place. Will Vanni Sartini and the squad be able to complete the move from the bottom of the standings to the playoffs?

Vancouver will also have a chance to make the playoffs with a loss through the back door. They could still get in with 3 different sets of results; If LA Galaxy loses to Minnesota and Salt Lake lose or ties to Kansas City. If LA Galaxy loses to Minnesota and LAFC loses or ties Colorado. Or if both Real Salt Lake and LAFC lose or tie their matches. It is a bit of a confusing scenario so check out right here as the MLS breaks down the 11 teams fighting for 6 playoff spots.

Whitecaps and Sounders Previous Results

Vancouver Whitecaps

The Whitecaps have ended the season with an amazing run. Just 2 losses in their past 22 matches including a run of 3 wins and 2 draws in their last 5 matches. Vancouver is coming off a 1-1 draw against LAFC that saw them miss out on a chance to clinch a playoff spot last week. Before that Vancouver came away with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota, Drew San Jose on the road 1-1, and defeated Portland 3-2 and Sporting KC 2-1 at home.

Vancouver will return to BC Place for this match where they have been almost perfect. 7 wins after finally returning home with just one loss earlier in the season to the Portland Timbers. The home side will hope their run of amazing play continues against their bitter rival.

Seattle Sounders

The Sounders and head coach Brian Schmetzer are on the opposite run of form. Winless in their past 5 matches with 2 draws and 3 losses, they have still been able to stay at the top of the Western Conference. The Sounders are coming off a draw at home against LA Galaxy, a 3-0 shellacking at the hands of LAFC, and a 2-1 loss at home to Sporting KC. To find the last time the Sounders took all 3 points you have to go back to October 9th at Lumen Field. A 4-1 win over the Whitecaps.

The previous result with the Whitecaps was a 2-2 draw at home back in June. This will be the first time Seattle has played at BC Place since March 30th… of 2019! That was a 0-0 draw and you have to go back to September 15th, 2018 to find the last time Seattle scored in Vancouver. The good news for the Sounders is they are almost back to full health with Jordan Morris ready to go once again.

Raul Ruidiaz will also try and get to the top of the golden boot race. He has 17 goals and currently sits tied for 2nd with Ola Kamara from DC United. Both players are chasing Valentin Castellanos who leads the league with 18.

News And Lineup Notes For The Whitecaps

Vanni Sartini will have a full roster once again to pick from for the Whitecaps vs Sounders Decision Day battle. Only Caio Alexandre and Tosaint Ricketts are unavailable as they deal with long-term injuries. With 4 days off between matches fitness shouldn’t be an issue for any of the players. This is what I imagine we will see to start the match tonight.

The usual 3-4-1-2 formation with the same lineup as the last match against LAFC. Lots of options off the bench if Vanni doesn’t like what he sees at the half. Lucas Cavallini and Deiber Caicedo can provide needed sparks in two completely different ways. I Asked Whitecaps Reporter Sarita Patel what the mood was of the squad the day before the big match, “They’re Focused, excited, and mainly ready.”
