More football? How can that be a bad thing? Two questions that will have an answer in 2022 as FOX put out the news itself on Thursday. The press-release was shy on details but here is what we know.
FOX will broadcast the games, they are also a minority owner of the new endeavor, there will be a “minimum” of eight teams that will “deliver high-quality, innovative professional football.” and …. well, that’s about it.
We also know one of the co-founders of the 1080’s league is onboard as Brian Woods put forth in a statement:
“I’m extremely passionate about football and the opportunity to work with FOX Sports and to bring back the USFL in 2022 was an endeavor worth pursuing. We look forward to providing players a new opportunity to compete in a professional football league and giving fans everywhere the best football viewing product possible during what is typically a period devoid of professional football.”Brian Woods – Co-Founder USFL and current Spring League CEO
There is currently no word on the status of ex-players/stars Herschel Walker, Steve Young, etc in regards to promoting or being involved in the league.
The original USFL had a predicted end once it tried to switch schedules to compete directly with the NFL. The early statement made it clear the new itteration is not intent on chasing that white whale.
