Whitecaps 2021 Season Opener: In Tough Against The Portland Timbers

The Whitecaps 2021 season opener kicks off Sunday night from Rio Tinto Stadium. The temporary home for the Whitecaps will see them host the Portland Timbers on April 18th. Vancouver is coming off of a split-squad game against Chicago FC and Indy Eleven. It was only their second preseason action. The Timbers are coming off a big CONCACAF Champions League win over Marathon from Honduras.

It seems like Vancouver could be a bit overmatched in this one. Especially with some of the players waiting to join the team or just getting into first-team training. Caio Alexandre and Newly acquired Whitecapd Bruno Gaspar broke into things on Saturday. Ali Adnan and Javion Bron wait for Visa Issues to be resolved before they can join the squad.

Head Coach Marc Dos Santos knows the team will be big underdogs. "Right now the facts are, they didn't have visa issues, they didn't have players that were not in, they were able to have a preparation." Don't think the players who are available won't be coming out with everything they have got.

Whitecaps 2021 Season Opener Lineups

As expected the Vancouver Whitecaps will go with a 4-4-2 with Lucas Cavallini and Cristian Dajome up top. Russell Teibert and Deiber Caicedo on the wings with Janio Bikel and Michael Baldisimo getting the start at midfield. Cristian Gutierrez, Andy Rose, Ranko Veselinovic, and Jake Nerwinski make up the back 4 with Maxime Crepeau starting in net for the Whitecaps.

The Timbers are fielding a strong lineup that has game experience already this season. Vancouver will be in tough against Deigo Valeri and Deigo Chara. Yimmi Chara had a break-out year last season for the Timbers.

Despite Vancouver being the home team, it could be a long day if they are unable to contain the Timbers firepower. Expect the Whitecaps to press high and force a mistake by Portland and try and strike first as they did in the preseason against the Chicago Fire.
