MLS Round Of 16 Whitecaps Vs Sporting KC An Opening Day Rematch

Sunday Night MLS Round Of 16 Whitecaps Vs Sporting KC Preview

Well, here we are, MLS round of 16 Whitecaps vs Sporting KC in a rematch from Saturday, February 29th. That happened to be the opening day for both teams and also my first time attending BC Place as a media member and not a fan. I got to do my first media scrum and asked Lucas Cavallini a horrible question and got a death stare. Oh how far we have come in 5 months!

Ask a dumb question and you get this look!

After a heart-pounding 2-0 win against the Chicago Fire, the Vancouver Whitecaps were able to squeak into the MLS Round of 16. After giving up the two-goal lead twice and losing too San Jose Earthquakes 4-3. Then a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Cascadia Rivals Seattle Sounders it was an uphill battle for the Whitecaps to make it out of the group. But thanks to Thomas Hasal, Yordy Reyna, Cristina Dajome, and others they were able to do just that.

Sporting KC is also coming off a 2-0 win against Real Salt Lake. Sporting Kansas City was tops of group D with 6 points. After losing the opener of the tournament to Minnesota United FC 2-1 they rebounded with a 3-2 win in a really exciting game against the Colorado Rapids. Mexican International Alan Pulido and Khiry Shelton lead the team with 3 goals each on the season, Shelton has 2 in the MLS is back Tournament.

MLS Round of 16 Whitecaps Vs Sporting KC Lineups and Preview

For the MLS Round of 16 Whitecaps vs Sporting KC, we know who won't be playing for Vancouver. Besides the one who gave me the death stare, Lucas Cavallini. And the 4 other caps that didn't make the trip down, the Caps can add Maxime Crepeau, Janio Bikel, Bryan Meredith (Left tournament for personal reasons.), and Erik Godoy to the list. Now it looks like Jasser Khmiri and David Milinkovic are questionable for the match vs Sporting KC.

This could add a whole set of problems for the Whitecaps. As I have been writing this preview no new updates have come out for Vancouver's back up Keeper situation. Jonathan Sirois was able to come over on a one-day loan from the Montreal Impact and he might be available again after the Impacts 0-1 loss to Orlando City FC. Otherwise hello Ali Adnan as the back -up!

Head coach Marc Dos Santos was keeping things close to his chest and we could see a number of different formations. Cristian Dajome and Yordy Reyna will have to come out the same as they did against the Chicago Fire, On Fire, If Vancouver has any chance of getting into the next round. We could see a defensive formation to start and bring on the attacking players as subs or we could see Vancouver go for it to start.

Sporting KC will be able to field a full squad against the Whitecaps and look to repeat on the beating earlier in the season. SKC will be the heavy favorites when things kick off at 8 pm but as we have seen so far in this tournament anything can happen. Vancouver will have to deal with Johnny Russel who scored an early one-minute goal against Real Salt Lake and has been a Caps Killer in his Career.

Look for Sporting KC to hold possession for most of the match and test Caps young keeper Thomas Hasal lots throughout the game. Ranko Veselinovic and Derek Cornelius will have their hands full all game in the MLS round of 16 Whitecaps vs Sporting KC. Not only with Alan Pulido and Johnny Russel but watch for Gadi Kinda who also had a good game in the opener against Vancouver.
