Bring On The Amusements, The MLS Is Back!
Major League Soccer has announced a return date for July 8th, 2020 in what will be called the… MLS Is Back Tournament. I want to work for the MLS Marketing department if they couldn’t come up with a better name for the tournament. Regardless I will take it!
Wednesday morning almost seemed like Christmas in June for Soccer fans in North America. The MLS announced and then soon teams were quick to send out information letting you know that the MLS is Back!
Here Are The Details You Need To Know!
Major League Soccer will play a World Cup Style Tournament down at Disneyland. It will involve all 24 teams in which each team is guaranteed at least 3 games that will count towards the regular season. I will get back to that shortly.
Teams will be separated into 6 groups based on Conferences which each team playing 3 games. This will determine a Round of 16 that will take place from July 25th-28th. A quarter-final, a semi-final on August 5th and 6th, with the Final being held on August 11th.
It has yet to be determined what the groups will look like or what the round of 16 would be. For those good at Math 16 teams means the top 2 from each Group plus the next best 4? Hold on!
VAR will be in play and like in the Bundesliga teams will have 5 subs each.
MLS Is Back… But The Conferences Are Different
Trying to divide 26 by 6 and not getting anywhere? Don’t worry if you feel bad just look at poor Nashville SC who thought they were in the Western Conference this whole time.
Besides that, there will be one group with 6 teams in the Eastern Conference that will consist of Orlando City FC and Inter Miami in Group A. The two teams will kick off the tournament which is only fighting. Joining their group on the East will be New York City FC, Philadelphia Union, Chicago Fire, and Nashville SC.
The Second Group in the East, group C, will consist of Toronto FC the Top Seed joined by The New England Revolution, D.C. United and Canadian Rivals the Montreal Impact. This is a tough group and my group of death in the East.
The third Group in the East or group E will have top Seed Atlanta United. They will have in their group Cinncinati FC, New York Red Bull, and the Columbus Crew.
The Western Conference Groups
MLS is Back so let’s take a look at the western Conference Groups! The top seeds of the groups will be LAFC, Seattle Sounders, and Real Salt Lake.
Group B will Feature Top Seed Seattle Sounders and with them will be rivals Vancouver Whitecaps FC. FC Dallas and San Jose Quakes round out the group.
Real Salt Lake will be the top seed in group D. joining them will be Sporting KC, the Colorado Rapids, and Minnesota United.
The Group of death in the West looks to be group F with LAFC joined by their Rivals the Galaxy. The Portland Timbers and the Houston Dynamo.
What Are They Playing For?
Besides the regular-season points that will count in the first 3 group games. The winner of the tournament will receive a berth in the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League.
Oh an 1.1 Million dollars and I’m sure a bit of bragging rights.
It is still yet to be seen how MLS plans to go on with the season after this but as Head Coach, Marc Dos Santos for the Vancouver Whitecaps said shortly after the draw in a Zoom Call, “You have a chance to come out of this with 9 points and a CONCACAF Champions League spot.”
