The SEC usually dominates the NFL Draft, but this year was something special. The toughest conference in college football had a record 15 players drafted in the first round. A total of 63 players heard their name called through the seven rounds, which is just one short of the record they set last year. Let’s look at the SEC edition of the 2020 NFL draft.
The Big 10 recorded 48 players drafted while the Pac 12 had an impressive 32. The ACC saw 27 players called while the Big 12 had a shocking draft with just 21. Well below their high standards.
If you wonder why the XFL and AAF failed (besides the CoronaVirus) it’s because we already have a developmental league and it’s called the SEC.
The LSU Tigers led the way with 14 players selected, which tied the Ohio State Buckeyes record from 2004. Five Tigers were selected in the first round alone.
By their standards, Alabama had a quiet year with just nine players drafted. However, it is the 11th straight year they have had at least three players taken in the top 50.
The Florida Gators had six names called with only C.J. Henderson going in the first round.
Jake Fromm saw five of his Georgia teammates get drafted as he was picked up by the Bills. He continued to slide in the draft and was eventually taken at pick 167. Well, below what was expected.
Auburn Tigers had four defensive players and two offensive players drafted in 2020, including two in the first round. An impressive showing from the Tigers.
LB Willie Gay Jr. led the way for Mississippi State who had four players drafted over the seven rounds. QB Tommy Stevens was drafted by the Saints at pick 240 and will get to learn from Drew Brees and Jameis Winston. That is a heck of a good place to hone your skills.
The Gamecocks had just three players drafted. DL Javon Kinlaw led the way and will play for the 49ers after he was taken at pick 14. In round three the Raiders picked up WR Brian Edwards.
Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas A&M, and Arkansas all had two players drafted. While Vanderbilt had just one.
For the first time since 2013 Ole Miss Rebels had no one drafted. Shocking that a program like that would have no one drafted. They need to lift their game.
NFL Draft 2020 SEC Edition
The SEC provided a tonne of 2020 NFL Draft picks. Especially the LSU Tigers who had 20 players claimed in 2020. You can read all about that here in my breakdown of the LSU 2020 Draft Class for Sports Talk Line
