101 Guide to Bundesliga

It's been a while since we saw a live sports event on a TV (not counting pay per view UFC 249). German Bundesliga is 2nd major sports League that decided to restart after Covid-19 literally shut down the whole world of sports. In this article, you will find a 101 Guide to Bundesliga since it may be the only sport to watch for several weeks.

There are rumors that Premier League may restart early June and earlier today Aussie rule football (completely different sport than football/soccer) announced it's coming back in June 11. If you live in the US you may have to wait for a while to see your regular sports such as MLB, NBA, NHL, and NFL.

Let's dive into Bundesliga!

Here is your 101 Guide to Bundesliga

What Is Football?

Great news, you are on a path to learn 101 of the most popular sport in the world.

If you know the sport skip to the next segment.

Football/Soccer is a ball game played by 2 teams (each team consists of 11 players -  Goalkeeper, Defenders, Midfielders and Forwards and different amount of substitute players depending on the competition - New post-Covid rules allow 5 subs per team).

The game is played in two halves. Each half takes 45 minutes with added time. Added time is added by the referee for time-wasting, due to injury, subbing and other events that stop the flow of the game.

There are generally 4 refs on the field - the main referee, 2 assistant referees that operate on the side of the pitch (call fouls and offsides),  the fourth referee, is assigned as the designated replacement for the main referee, if the latter becomes incapable of refereeing the game, however, his main responsibility is to assist with substitution of players.

According to new rules, there should be VAR refs that may not be present in the post-Covid games.

The goal of the game is to score more goals. Each goal counts for 1 point.

A team is awarded 3 points for winning a game 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss.

These are some of the basic rules of the game of football.

Now you should be ready to do the most important part pick a team you will support.

Review the guide to Bundesliga team selection bellow and pick a team that suits your style!

Do you perhaps call it Soccer?

Yes - soccer is football for everybody outside of the USA and lucky for you the rules are very similar, so there is not too much to learn about the sport, however, you need to do something even more important! Pick a team you will support at least until your regular sports come back.
