Great Road Half For The Whitecaps at Galaxy
It was a great road start for the Whitecaps at Galaxy Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park. Up against a very loud Galaxy crowd, Vancouver came out much more prepared than their home opener. head coach Marc Dos Santos went with a 4-4-2 with Fredy Montero in for a sick Yordy Reyna. And Janio Bikel in for an injured Jake Nerwinksi who was a late scratch. LA went with a 4-3-3 under head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Johnathan Dos Santos and Joe Corona are the two changes from the 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo.
Bikel made his presence felt early and often earning an early free-kick. Vancouver was able to get the first corner of the night thanks to Cristian Dajome but it was sent over the net by Jasser Khmiri. Both teams felt each other out for a bit until Cristian Pavon was able to win a 5th-minute corner for the LA Galaxy. He sent it long and out of touch for a wasted set piece. The Galaxy would get the next chance on the left side after a nice switch to Pavon. He found Emiliano Insua on the overlap with tonnes of space. His cross was able to find Aleksandar Katai but his header was sent wide of the net.
Cavallini made an effort to have more than 22 touches Saturday night Whitecaps at Galaxy. He was pressing hard and for a striker, very willing to go to the ground on a challenge. Vancouver was able to weather the early storm but an 11th minute foul by Bikel on Pavon gave the Galaxy another set-piece. Ali Adnan was able to intercept it and take off to the races. A nice move past one defender and he was able to find InBeom in space. With two options to the left and a streaking Dajome on the right, Inbeom made the poor decision to step inside and try a shot but it was easily blocked.
Bikel was able to pick out Dajome down the right but his driven cross went right into the arms of David Bingham in the 12th minute. The Galaxy would get a chance in the 15th minute after a rare first-half touch by Chicharito. Rolf Feltscher sent a cross out left to Pavon but his volley sailed way over the net for a goal kick. Things calmed down for the Whitecaps at Galaxy as things continued in the first half. Dos Santos had to leave the pitch twice to get treatment. He missed last week and doesn't look to be 100% game-ready yet.
The Whitecaps at Galaxy were able to hold possession playing it back to goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau waiting for their chances. A turnover would lead to a chance for LA and Katai but he put it over the net. Vancouver would get a chance after some hard work by Ricketts to win the ball back. He found David Milinkovic whose cross was headed over the net by Cavallini in the 20th minute. Ricketts would rush back in only to have his shot blocked before Cavallini's shot was deflected right to David Bingham.
The teams would again trade possession for several minutes before a great chance for Los Angeles. A long switch by the Galaxy in the 24th minute and Maxime Crepeau and Janio Bikel got their wires crossed. Instead of Crepeau being able to clear it Bikel headed it right to Klejstan wasn't able to put it into the open net from 35 yards away. The Whitecaps would get the next chance when Cavallini was fouled by Feltscher to win a free-kick. Inbeom sent a beautiful delivery in that Andy Rose was able to head it right into the crossbar.
The Whitecaps at Galaxy did a great job defending and forcing LA out wide. After a 29th minute corner by the Galaxy was cleared by Khmiri the second phase was also sent away. Pavon was back in but his cross was sent right to Maxime Crepeau. Vancouver gave it right away and Bikel fouled Pavon in the middle of the pitch with a chance for a free-kick. It was deflected out of touch and the Galaxy would take it quickly but get nothing from it. The Whitecaps would concede another corner when Ali Adnan did his patented chop kick out of play.
LA would regain possession after Bikel was called for a foul on the offside... it was a weird play. Vancouver would clear and start the break out when Katai took a yellow card for a cheeky foul on Dajome in the 34th-minute. The Galaxy would almost get a chance a minute later when Insua put a threw ball into the box. Maxime Crepeau made a great run to get to the ball but took a boot right to the face from Katai. It wasn't dirty and on the follow-through but Crepeau was down for a couple of minutes. He was good to go, he is Canadian eh!
The Whitecaps at Galaxy would get another opportunity when Dajome was able to steal the ball and get it to Inbeom. He went for the long cross to the left and hit it off Ricketts. It was once again a wasted chance for Vancouver. Dajome would create a great chance in the 41st minute when he was able to cross it into the box. Ricketts was late to make a move and the ball went right to Bingham. Vancouver would test the Galaxy keeper again before the half would end when Dajome let go of a turf burner. The Galaxy got a late free-kick but it was wasted over the net by Nicholas DePuy.
2nd Half And Ricketts Lights Up The Galaxy
The Whitecaps at Galaxy saw the home side make one sub at halftime. Jonathan Dos Santos was replaced by Perry Kitchen in the midfield. Dos Santos still doesn't look 100% as he received treatment twice in the first half. Vancouver didn't make any changes and came out aggressive to start the half but gave up an early chance. Chicharito was able to get the ball in the box but Khmiri was able to knock it down for Andy Rose who cleared it away from danger. A bad clearance by Russel Teibert in the 48th minute was cleared by Bikel before the Whitecaps at Galaxy gave up their first shot on goal.
Crepeau was in a great position and able to smother the ball. He got things going quickly and the Whitecaps had a 49th-minute chance that Milinkovic chipped over the goal. The Whitecaps at Galaxy had so many transitions they were not able to capitalize on. in the 50th minute Ricketts went for a shot instead of seeing his options. The Galaxy was leading in possession at the 54th-minute mark but Vancouver looked more dangerous. That was until a chance by Feltscher that was blocked. The teams would exchange uncalled fouls before the Galaxy rushed back in the 55th minute.
Pavon once again worked into the middle but sent it nowhere near the net to test Maxime Crepeau. Vancouver would rush back in the 57th minute but once again indecision by the Caps led to a turnover. The Whitecaps at Galaxy was unlucky to be stuck in a 0-0 draw with all the chances they were creating. Sebastian Lletget would replace Katai in the 59th minute for the second Galaxy sub. Teibert was down for a couple of minutes after getting a shot to his family jewels.
The home team would press again in the 62nd minute when Pavon crossed it into the box. Crepeau got a hand on it but it fell right to Feltscher. His shot was blocked by Rusty and cleared from danger. The home fans were extremely loud trying to cheer on their team for the go-ahead goal. They would get another chance foiled by Russel Teibert and sent out for a corner. The ensuing free-kick was headed and then lashed away by Khmiri. The Whitecaps at Galaxy had lost posession but they stayed in good spots defensively.
LA would try and breakthrough in the 67th minute but couldn't break the Vancouver backline. David Milinkovic was doing some good work in his own zone. Ryan Raposo would come on in his MLS debut in the 67th minute for Cristian Dajome. The Whitecaps at Galaxy would push back and Inbeom would earn a yellow card on Joe Corona in the 68th minute. The Free kick was sent right to Bingham and he tried to get things going quickly.
The Whitecaps at Galaxy would get a chance in the 71st minute but Cavallini was offside. He was also stopped by Bingham in close, things have not started the Canadian international striker's way this year. Vancouver would be rewarded for their hard work in the 74th minute. Ali Adnan was able to steal the throw-in from LA and find Raposo. His chip sent Adnan on a run and he beat his man before laying it back in the box. Tosaint Ricketts found the far post and gave the Whitecaps at Galaxy the 1-0 lead.
Things really got interesting after the kick-off as Joe Corona fouled Teibert. He received his second yellow from referee Ismail Elfath and was shown a red and sent off in the 75th minute. It was a great chance for the Whitecaps at Galaxy to take all 3 points at Dignity Health Sports Park. To the chorus of boos by the LA fans, the stretcher was brought out but Teibert walked off under his own power. Things kicked back off in the 79th minute with both teams down to 10 for the time being. Galaxy was in with a cross but Kmiri was able to clear it out with no trouble. The Tunisian international has played well in his two games in LA.
Vancouver was trying to hold the ball in the 81st minute working it down either side. Ricketts got a bit out of control and turned it over to the Galaxy who tried to work it back up the field. Raposo was influential in his debut for the Whitecaps at Galaxy winning back possession. Vancouver was able to force a corner in the 82nd minute before a Galaxy sub. Ethan Zubak came on for Sacha Kljestan in midfield. but the Whitecaps at Galaxy had a chance in deep that was cleared away by Chicharito. LA tried to counter but it wasn't dangerous and the ball came to Crepeau.
The Whitecaps at Galaxy would see another MLS debut as David Milinkovic would make way for Leonard Owusu. When the commentators mention N'Golo Kante and a Whitecaps player in the same sentence we should all take notice. Vancouver would continue to look for a second goal when Raposo had a great layoff to Ricketts. He was fouled by Giancarlo González and a penalty was awarded in the 88th minute. The Whitecaps at Galaxy had a chance to seal the game on the road. Lucas Cavallini stepped up and tried to send it straight through but didn't foul Bingham. It was shades of Ali Adnan's missed kick last season.
Fredy Montero would sub on for Ricketts for Vancouver's final substitution and there would be 7 added minutes. Down to 10 men, the Galaxy would push everything they could at the visiting Whitecaps. Owusu was able to make a nice tackle for a deep throw. LA would waste no time putting it on goal and Maxime Crepeau had to be sharp again smothering the ball. Raposo was able to set up another chance at the 90 +3 mark but Cavallini couldn't score or find an outlet.
Things opened right up for both Whitecaps at Galaxy late in the game. Both teams traded chances but it stayed 1-0 for the road team. Vancouver was fouled and able to kill some important minutes off the clock. A set-piece late for the Galaxy was wasted but they were able to keep possession. The Whitecaps at Galaxy was able to slow things down and kill off the final minute without any more danger. It was a great win for Vancouver and a well deserved clean sheet for Maxime Crepeau.
