Rosie Ruiz was a Cuban-American woman who became famous for a cheating scandal in sports history.
Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1953, she graduated from Wayne State College in Nebraska with a degree in music.
She worked as a secretary for a commodities firm in New York City.
Rosie Ruiz’s Name Became Synonymous With Cheating In Sports!
Rosie Ruiz only participated in two major marathons, though she was not a dedicated marathon runner.
In the 1980 Boston Marathon, she claimed to have won the race with a record-breaking time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 56 seconds.
But it was later discovered that she hadn’t run the whole 26.2 miles.
Witnesses said she joined the race just a mile from the finish line, and her suspiciously fresh appearance raised doubts.
She appeared barely sweaty or fatigued, and other runners didn’t recall seeing her during the race.
Later, after eight days, she was disqualified from the women’s title temporarily.
This was not her first rodeo; she had also cheated in the 1979 New York City Marathon.
In those fleeting moments, she took the subway and rejoined the race near the end to get a fast qualifying time.
After being disqualified from both Marathons, she largely disappeared from the public domain.
Tragically, she died of cancer in Florida on July 8, 2019, at the age of 66.
Her story is still remembered as one of the biggest scandals in sports history and led to changes in how marathons are monitored, including better tracking systems to prevent cheating.
