McKayla Maroney’s father, her biggest supporter, was a quarterback at Purdue University.

Recently, McKayla, 29, signed a confidentiality agreement with USA Gymnastics about alleged sexual abuse.

Highlights

However, her lawyer said USA Gymnastics broke the law by asking her to agree to the settlement.

Earlier, in 2017, McKayla alleged that the USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar had repeatedly molested her, starting when she was 13 years old until she retired from the sport in 2016.

She made the allegation on Twitter under the #MeToo hashtag. Nassar had been arrested in November 2016 and accused of sexually assaulting female minors throughout his career.

During Nassar’s sentencing hearing, USA Gymnastics waived the agreement, at least temporarily, to allow Maroney to make a victim’s statement in court against Nassar, who is now serving a 40-to-175-year prison sentence.

On May 16, 2018, it was announced that Maroney and the other victims would be awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

“In short, my dad, we found out he was addicted to pain pills,” “I didn’t know this. He went to a hotel randomly one day and was like ‘I’m going to quit.’ And we were like ‘What? What?’ His best friend took him, and he died trying to detox, quit from pain pills. He could have just gone to a rehab place and done it right. He didn’t and he passed away.”

“I … learned a few weeks ago from my daughter that at the world championships in Tokyo, [Nassar] drugged her, made her lay nude on a treatment table, straddled her and digitally penetrated her while rubbing his erect penis against her…She was only 15 years old. She said to me, ‘Mom I thought I was going to die.’ “This experience has shattered McKayla,”  “She has transformed from a bubbly, positive, loving, world class athlete into a young adult who was deeply depressed, at times suicidal. At times, I was unsure whether I would open her bedroom door and find her dead.”
