Next, in 2007, the Pentagon released a report saying his death was accidental.
Marie Tillman Moved On With New Husband, Joe Shenton, After The Death Of Pat Tillman
Patt Tillman’s wife, Marie, found a “just in case” letter he had written before deploying to Afghanistan.
The letter read:
Marie Tillman wasn’t sure if Pat knew how important the letter would be, but she saw it as a gift. Knowing it was okay to move on and live her life comforted her.
Around the same time, Marie met Joe Shenton, an investment banker from Chicago, who had three sons- Joey, Johnny, and Sam, from a previous marriage.
Their first meeting took place in 2011 at a dinner with supporters of Marie’s foundation. Despite being a stranger, they felt an immediate connection.
Marie instantly felt Joe understood her deeper, beyond the public story surrounding her. She felt he indeed saw her and not just her past.
While Marie has kept close ties with Pat’s family, including his mother, Mary “Dannie,” in California and his brother, Kevin, in Arizona, they all gather for Pat’s Run each year.
Joe was delighted that Dannie and Kevin even attended their wedding, which meant a lot to them.
Though Joe never met Pat Tillman, he respects him as the hero the public remembers.
He recalled a touching story about a neighbor who once worked with the Special Olympics team in Arizona.
The neighbor told them Pat regularly visited her players at ASU and the Arizona Cardinals.
Marie also credits Joe for helping her move forward. They married in 2012, and she calls him her hero.
