His father, Mark, is an account executive for Sentry. He has been working in the insurance industry since 1988. Moreover, he completed his higher studies at Northern State University.

Grey’s father played defensive line on the Northern State football team in college and coached football, baseball, basketball, and soccer.

Similarly, Grey Zabel’s mother, Tanna Negaard Zabel, who now works at Northern State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and finance, is also a former athlete.

She scored 2,132 career points for the Harding County High School girls basketball team.

Moreover, Tanna starred for the NSU women’s basketball team. An all-conference performer, Tanna recorded 1,192 points and 614 rebounds.

The Zabel family is full of sports geniuses. Father Mark and mother Tanna Zabel have three sons: elder Peyton, younger Jett, and middle child Grey Zabel.

The three Zabel brothers have won six state championships inside the Dakota Dome in 2024.

Grey’s elder brother, Peyton, played Division I baseball for Texas State Univeristy. Similarly, he is an inductee of the South Dakota High School Baseball Hall of Fame.

Moreover, his career included stops at Augustana University, where he was a member of the baseball and football teams. Then, he spent two years on the Iowa Western Community College baseball team.

On the other hand, Grey’s younger brother, Jett Zabel, is a football tight end for North Dakota State University. He graduated from T.F. Riggs High School in 2024 and played tight end, quarterback, and defensive end.

Following his elder brother Grey’s collegiate career pathway, Jett committed to North Dakota State University in December 2023 after receiving a football scholarship from their program.

It’s been a blast being involved with these kids.I have coached football, baseball, basketball, soccer. So I know a lot of these kids quite well and just to see them blossom into their football careers has been kind of special.
