Patriots File Tampering Charges Against Texans

NFL cheating with New England as the victim this time? The Patriots file tampering chargers versus the Texans and the NFL offseason and future owners meetings just got more interesting.

The 2019 NFL season hasn't even begun and teams are already throwing big hits. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots filed tampering charges with the league on Wednesday against the Texans for attempting to talk to Patriots Director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio about their open General Manager position.

According to the NFL's anti-tampering policy, it is impermissible for "any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or the NFL."

The Texans fired GM Brian Gaines last Friday, June 7th. This came quite conspicuously on the day after the Patriots ring ceremony that was attended by former Patriots and current Texans executive Jack Easterby. The former team chaplain has a close relationship with Caserio and, according to the charges, seems to have made attempts to sway Caserio to joining Houston's staff.

Pro Football Talk reported that the evidence of the tampering comes in the form of photos, videos, and more that indicate communication between Easterby and Caserio.

The outcome of this issue is unclear. If the NFL concludes that the Texans did tamper with Caserio, they could be subject to a range of fines or potentially lost draft picks depending on the severity of the case. What we can be sure of is that the rivalry between New England and Houston just jumped up a whole bunch of notches. When the Patriots head to Houston for a Sunday night matchup in December, you can guarantee there will be some fireworks.
