It's hard to believe it's almost NFL Week 2, but time does indeed fly when you are having this much fun. The NFL Wednesday Wakeup is here to get you up to speed as you get to work on what is bouncing around the NFL this Wednesday morning.
NFL Wednesday Wakeup
Antonio Brown Accused of Sexual Assault - Are you kidding me? Click here to read Sports Talk Line's own Matt Woolsey who was quickly on this piece of breaking news and wow, there is a LOT to unpack here. To put more pressure on the situation the Patriots traded away WR Demaryius Thomas to AFC East division rival New York Jets to help make room on the roster/meeting room for the All-Pro WR. As Matt stipulated, this is an accusation brought forth in a civil suit, not charges filed by a district attorney. We have to let this play out.
Malik Jackson Injury Lands Him on IR - The birds did get the win but you do NOT want to put your prized DT on injured reserve. Coach Dough Pederson said Malik had a "significant injury" in referencing the foot issue according to the NFL Network guys. In the run-heavy NFC East, this is a major hit. The Eagles do have depth but Jackson was supposed to replace Michael Bennett who left via free agency. Fletcher Cox does a LOT better when he is not the only guy they have to pay attention to on the line. Mike Garafolo is also reporting Philadelphia is signing DL Akeem Spence in a corresponding move.
Texans Release CB Aaron Colvin - After you give a guy a 4 years, $35 million dollar contract and pay him $7.5 million with another $6.5 still guaranteed what kind of coach will have a knee jerk reaction and cut said player after calling a soft defense and watching a WR get a critical 9 yard gain for the other team who then win it on a FG? If you answered Texas Head Coach Bill O'Brien congratulations! You win a kewpie doll! Let's dial this up one more time for clarity. You cut a guy because he played the defense you called and ... the defense called was the WRONG defense to call in that situation and instead of taking responsibility you point the finger at a player. Oh yea, this is going to play out well in the locker room. To be fair Colvin was a backup DB. Yet he was on the team for a reason. The knee jerk reaction at a minimum points to dysfunction and begs the question, who made the decision to put the kid on the final 53? Oh wait .. the head coach? Exactly. Reportedly Philip Gaines was signed to fill out the roster spot.
Redskins' Adrian Peterson's Role - Two things happened in week 1 for Washington. First, Peterson was a healthy scratch for the first time in his career. Second, Redskins' RB Derrius Guice got hurt again. We will find out in week 2 if Peterson will sulk or be motivated. I don't think it's even a choice, the guy is a future first ballot, Hall of Famer. He will be balling in week 2. If you have need of a fantasy RB .. make your move now .. wait .. too late.
Raiders Safety Johnathan Abram Injury - MNF was kind to the Raiders but not without cost. Rookie is reportedly getting a second opinion on a torn rotator cuff and labrum injury from the game and is most likely out for the season. Ouch. Oakland was dominant versus the Broncos but giving up your starting SS to start the season is never good news. No word on any roster moves, yet.
