Antonio Brown Raiders Drama

Another Failed Marriage for Antonio Brown

Antonio Brown has always been a hardworking individual on and off the field. A model player that anyone would love to have on their team. It was Steelers that would find the diamond in the rough when they drafted Brown in the sixth round of the 2010 season. Brown had a chip on his shoulder believing he should have been drafted higher. He later proved to the NFL that he indeed should have been drafted higher.

Brown broke out in his fourth season of the league amassing 1500 yards and eight touchdowns. From his fourth season until now he never had less than 1280 yards and even set a career record of 15 touchdowns in 2018. And yet his marriage with the Steelers became rocky when he skipped a walk through just prior to their Week 17 matchup. Brown would not play in the Week 17 regular-season finale against the Bengals. This all stemmed from a disagreement he and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger earlier in the week.

Brown was done with the Steelers and the Steelers were done with Brown when they tried to trade Brown to the Bills. Brown would later threaten to retire if the trade went through, the trade obviously did not happen.

The Steelers were able to find a trade partner in the Oakland Raiders for a 2019 3rd and 5th round pick. Brown got his big contract and it seemed like all parties were happy, or so it seemed.

In the offseason, while in Europe Brown would attend a cryogenic therapy facility and suffer from frostbite on his feet due to improper footwear. Cannot make this stuff up. Then the world of the NFL was introduced to helmet-gate. Brown threatened to retire once again when the NFL informed him he would have to wear a different helmet than the one he has been wearing since he entered the league. He even painted the Raider colors over his old helmet, again we cannot make this stuff up.

He would file grievance after grievance, skip parts of training camp and workouts, but the NFL did not budge on their stance. Brown finally returned to Raiders with a different helmet and again all parties seemed happy, until….

Brown would get into an altercation with general manager Mike Mayock over Brown’s Instagram post and it was the beginning of the end for Brown and the Raiders.

Players for the Raiders would tell head coach Jon Gruden to do whatever is necessary and at this point, Brown has lost any support from even his teammates until Brown would publicly apologize to everyone, except Mayock. And again, all seemed happy and Brown went to not playing Monday night to playing Monday night, again until

Everyone woke up and Brown was asking for his release from the NFL. It was later reported that Brown received two disciplinary letters from the Raiders signaling a fine for the Mayock altercation and another one saying his guarantees would be voided.

There were reports the Raiders could place Brown on a did not report list if he refused to show up for Monday’s game which would guarantee Brown did not play in 2019 but ultimately the Raiders would release Antonio Brown.

So, the marriage between the Raiders and Brown is over before it began. There was no honeymoon period just one thing after another. Brown is now a free agent and I am sure there are GMs out there doing the homework to see if they can somehow get control over one of the greatest wide receivers playing the game today. Knock on wood if you’re with me.
