Robert fondly recalled a memory from 2009 when Smokey, his father, gifted his grandson Mike and other Big Sky seniors with eagle feathers in a traditional Blackfeet ceremony after a basketball game.

Smokey explained the significance of the ceremony, guiding the young men into adulthood. He also shared the origin of the family name.

Smokey’s father had once stolen the best horse from the rival Crow tribe, which was tied to the chief’s door, and rode it away into the sunset.

The name “RidesattheDoor” is translated from the Pikuni language to mean “he who rides the best horse at the enemy’s door,” a powerful symbol of bravery and strength.

Robert Doore Grew Up Watching His Uncles Making Family’s Sports Legacy In Browning

Darnell’s brother, Doug Davis, played football at Montana State and was part of the 1984 national championship team.

Similarly, Doug has five sons, all of whom have connections to sports.

Doug’s oldest son, Leo, was a standout offensive tackle for Montana State’s Big Sky Conference championship teams in 2010 and 2011.

Moreover, Robert Doore mentioned his great uncle, Pixie Kipp, who was the Detroit Lions’ first-round pick out of Western Montana College.

He grew up admiring his uncles and Doug Davis, who made football popular in Browning, where they’re from.

He recalled how football was gaining popularity, even among a community known more for runners and basketball players.

This passion for football also extended to Robert’s love for the NFL, especially for the team that was once known as the Washington Redskins.
