The NFL Draft is here and the Cowboys are looking at LSU DE K'Lavon Chaisson with the 17th pick of the 1st round for good reason. The kid is pretty darn good.
The Cowboys are set on one side with All-Pro Demarcus Lawrence on their defensive line. On the other side, they have lost players to free agency and suspension leaving the cupboard rather bare in regards to edge rushers in big D.
To be a first-round pick at defensive end in the NFL there are three things you have to do.
- Read/Diagnose the play
- Set the edge against the run
- Pressure the QB
You check those three boxes and you are an every-down player on defense and if one of those boxes is "pressure the QB" you are going in the first round. Sure, you can get drafted being able to "just" get after the QB but if you can diagnose plays on the fly and set the edge against the run you are draft day gold.
That is just where Chaisson may be. There is talk he is a "system" guy, and there is always some truth to that when you are looking at a guy from a dominating program. Having talent around you helps. But when you break down the kid's game he flashes all the traits you need to catch an NFL scout's eye. He needs to develop more strength but most players do. He has the frame to that and carry more weight. He has the metrics and the skills. Consistency is the one red flag but it's not a huge one.
If Chaisson is available at 17 you just know the Cowboys will be looking long and hard at making the call.
