Week 2 Whitecaps Preview: How We Got Here The Week 2 Whitecaps Preview will break down Saturday nights game for the Vancouver Whitecaps at Galaxy. It will be the second game of the 2020 MLS season for both squads. Vancouver is coming in after a 3-1 loss in their home opener to Sporting Kansas City. Meanwhile, Los Angeles settled for a 1-1 draw at Houston Dynamo. The Galaxy will play their home opener and both teams will be hungry for a win. The Whitecaps are coming off a disappointing loss to Sporting KC. It saw them come out flat in the first 20 minutes of the game, not able to equal SKCs intensity. It wasn't until Vancouver got scored on in the 17th Minute of a set-piece that they woke up. Alan Pulido showed why he led Liga MX last year in goals with a precision header past Maxime Crepeau. The Whitecaps were able to find their legs and draw even. After some nice work down the left side from David Milinkovic. He was able to beat his man down the side and sent in a nice ball. Jake Nerwinski was able to slide it in for his first goal at home. Photo by Joshua Griffith 11 minutes later in the 39th minute, SKC would strike back and re-take the lead. After some nice work on the left side by Luis Martins to beat Cristian Dájome. He was able to cut it back into the top of the box where Gadi Kinda unleashed a perfect strike. 6 Whitecaps were between Kinda and the goal but no one was able to close the gap quickly enough. Vancouver would get some chances before the half ended. Both teams didn't make any halftime subs until the 71st minute. Fredy Montero came on for David Milinkovic which pushed Reyna out wide and Montero fell into the #10. Gerso came on for Johnny Russell for Sporting KC. Vancouver had much better possession numbers in the second half. They were unable to test Tim Melia and the one chance they did get he was able to grab. It would have been offside on Cavallini if he had scored. While KC would use up their last two bringing on Gianluca Bosio for Gadi Kinda. And former Whitecap Erik Hurtado for Alan Pulido both at the 90th minute. Vancouver was pressing late for the tieing goal. But was burnt on the counter by their former teammate. Sporting KC worked it around a little bit in the zone before a spectacular turn by Gerso. He chipped it back post over Derek Cornelius and between Ali Adnan. Erik Hurtado Vollyed it past Maxime Crepeau for the 3-1 goal at the death. And the Week 2 Whitecaps Preview at Galaxy March 7th will show we they need to be much better. Jake Nerwinski scored a goal and had the best game of any Vancouver player. Inbeom created 4 chances but at times faded a bit having to play so deep and cover for Jake and Ali on the wings. David Milinkovic also had a good game with several of his runs not recognized by his teammates. The LA Galaxy are coming off a draw on the road to Houston Dynamo. It was the season debut for Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez but he had a quiet game in his standards. After an early chance by Aleksandar Katai was headed off the post, LA was able to take the lead for real in the 13th minute. After a beautiful long dropkick by the keeper, David Bingham and Cristian Pavon was on the run. He was able to make the Dynamo players look like training dummies before scoring a wonder goal. The Galaxy would take their 1-0 lead into half time but Houston would respond. In the 54th minute the referee Jair Marrufo allowed play to go on after Houston was fouled. Fans were glad he did as Mauro Manotas was able to go across the net and beat Bingham. Zarek Valentin had the assist and neither team could score again before the final whistle. Week 2 Whitecaps Preview: What Can We Expect? After a disappointing home opener here is what Vancouver needs to do better in the Week 2 Whitecaps Preview. After crushing Vancouver 4-1 in the preseason and coming off a 1-1 draw away at Houston. Los Angeles will be walking into Saturdays Whitecaps at Galaxy MLS match the more confident team. Coming into their home opener will make things even tougher on Vancouver. Vancouver will need much better play from their midfield. This should be helped with the arrival and training all week of both Leonard Owusu and Janio Bikel. Head coach Marc Dos Santos expressed a desire to play a 4-3-3 to create more chances from the midfield for the likes of Cavallini, Dajome, and Milinkovic. Both players could slot in which would mean 2 players would need to come out. I can't see MDS taking out Inbeom but maybe shake things up by starting both Bikel and Owusu in place of Russel Teibert and Yordy Reyna. Photo By Joshua Griffith The Galaxy comes in with an 8-3-1 record against Vancouver. The teams have equaled out as of late going 2-2-1 each in their last 5 games. Last year the Galaxy came into BC place led by Ibrahimović and won 2-0. the Whitecaps returned the favor with a 4-3 win at Dignity Health Sports Park on September 29th. Expect the home side to want to give their fans a show, especially Chicharito. Head coach for the Galaxy Guillermo Barros Schelotto should go with a similar lineup that he did against the Dynamo. Look for them to come out early and ofter on the offensive trying to spring Pavon and Chicharito. It will be a big game for the Whitecaps as they won't want to head home after 2 games without any points after last years disasterous season. Week 2 Whitecaps Preview: Players To Watch Three players to watch for the Week 2 Whitecaps preview will be Ali Adnan, Lucas Cavallini, and Hwang Inbeom. All three struggled in the home opener for their standards. Expect Ali to work down on the left side with Milinkovic lots to try and create chances. He will also need to be more solid in his own end and so often he is beaten for scoring chances or goals. Inbeom will need to be a more prominent figure on the field While his stats were alright he was non-existent at times. Photo By Joshua Griffith Also look for Lucas Cavallini, who scored 4 goals in his final 4 preseason games, to bounce back. He had some chances that he should score on so there was that spark for the Week 2 Whitecaps Preview. If he gets more than 22 touches in the entire game that would go along way in ensuring he has a couple more chances on goal. One thing is sure for Vancouver is they can not expect their RB to be getting goals every week. It's something they will need to take advantage of and build on goals by the actual goal scorers. The Week 2 Whitecaps preview wouldn't be complete unless we touched a bit more on the new midfielders. This is it Vancouver fans! They are here and with rumors of another being signed soon we can only hope this is the answer to everyone's… Why don't we get a better midfield? Questions! LA Galaxy Players To Watch Of course, Cristian Pavon will be a key player for the Galaxy as he looks to be in midseason form. This should scare other teams as he had 3 goals and 6 assists in just 11 appearances in the 2019 MLS season. He added one more in the two playoff games. Newcomer and big MLS signing Chicharito failed to score in his first game with the Galaxy. He did have his flashes and will need to be a focus for the back 2 of the Whitecaps. Midfielder Sacha Kljestan had a good game with Sebastian Lletget. The two should become more and more dangerous on the distribution as the season moves on. One thing also to watch for the Week 2 Whitecaps preview is how the home side defends. Last season they tried to outscore every team but with the loss of Zlatan Ibrahimovic I don't know if they will be able to rely on that this year.
