Nevish HS softball coach Michael James O’Rourke passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, at his home in Walker, MN, at the age of 75.
The coach is survived by his second wife, Larson, his two children, four grandchildren, and seven siblings.

Michael James O’Rourke, affectionately known as “Mike,” was a dedicated and passionate individual, both on and off the field.
As a dedicated coach for the Nevis High School softball team, he inspired many young athletes with his guidance.
In addition to his coaching, Michael James O’Rourke was involved in various business ventures and served in the U.S. Air Force.
Because of his diverse achievements, he excelled in everything he pursued and was cherished for his humorous and lively personality wherever he went.
Unfortunately, his sudden passing has deeply saddened the Nevis High School community, leaving them in mourning over the loss of a beloved figure.
Michael Served In The U.S. Air Force As A Korean Linguist Before Coaching At Nevis High School
Michael grew up in a loving household in South Minneapolis with his siblings and parents.
From a young age, he was interested in many things, particularly sports, partly because he grew up with brothers and played various sports with them.
Mike had natural leadership qualities and a great personality. Later, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
He trained hard as a Korean linguist and completed two tours of duty as a 6903 Skivvy Nine, Able Company member.
Upon returning to Minneapolis, he met and married Mari Povroznik, with whom he had two wonderful children, Cap and Molli.
Further, Mike was a devoted father who was known for passing on his kindness and life lessons to his children.
His children went on to marry and have kids, turning Michael into a grandfather. He was always generous with his hugs, wisdom, and laughter and cherished his role as a grandparent.
In addition to his military service, Mike explored various career paths. After returning from the Air Force, he became involved in business.
As a natural salesman, Mike built a successful career selling various products, ranging from suits to insurance to health products.
Furthermore, he was also a self-proclaimed “jockaholic,” a lifelong Minnesota sports fan, and an avid athlete.
However, his greatest love was fastpitch softball, and he played for numerous local and national teams.
Later in life, he shared his passion for the game by coaching the Nevis High School softball team.
Nevis Married The Second Time, Larson After Which They Moved To Nevis
Born on July 30, 1949, Mike was the second child of Jim and Muriel O’Rourke and grew up in South Minneapolis with his seven siblings.
He had four sisters: Anne Bartel (Greg), Liz Staples (Mike (d)), Patty O’Rourke (Dave), and Joan Oyaas (Mark), and three brothers: David (Carol), Tim, and Bob (Tammy).
Mike and his second wife, Leah Larson, moved to Nevis, MN, where they built a life together on 10 acres in the woods—just as he had always dreamed.
Though they did not have children together, they enjoyed each other’s company, and Mike was deeply committed to family life.
Moreover, he quickly made friends in the community, embracing nature’s beauty and his neighbors’ warmth
Unfortunately, he passed away, but everyone who knew him will deeply miss his love, laughter, and sportsmanship legacy.

- Michael attended Annunciation and DeLaSalle High School, where he proudly served as the President of the Class of ’67.
- In his memory, a celebration of Life will be held on February 22, from 2 to 5 p.m., at 1114 American Blvd, Bloomington.
- Additionally, a second gathering will be held this spring in Walker to commemorate his life and bring together his friends from up north.
