Naomi Haile Girma is a professional American soccer player who plays center-back for Chelsea in the Women’s Super League club.
She played college soccer for the Stanford Cardinal, which she captained in the 2019 national championship.

The transfer fee was reported to be approximately $1.1. million (£881,000), making Girma the first ever women’s player to be sold for over $1 million.
Girma was officially presented at Stamford Bridge prior to Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

Girma was born in San Jose, California, on June 14, 2000. She is the younger child of her father, Grima Aweke, and mother, Seble Demissie.
Naomi’s father, Aweke, is originally from Ethiopia. He played football in his youth and was regarded as one of the top players in his region.
However, he fled Ethiopia during the “Red Terror,” a violent civil war that left more than 1 million dead.
In Aweke’s case, he eventually made it to the United States as a refugee at 19 years old. He initially worked as a busboy, later as a dishwasher, and was finally employed as an electrical engineer.
Moreover, he studied for a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and has worked as a product engineer at Abbott, LifeScan, and SJM.
On the other hand, Naomi Girma’s mother is also a US immigrant from Ethiopia; she came to the US to pursue higher studies.

When Naomi’s father migrated to America, fleeing from the Ethiopian dictator government, he was a young boy chasing dreams.
Girma Aweke formed Maleda Soccer Club for the region’s Ethiopian community in the Bay Area. It created an environment for Naomi to be enthusiastically involved in football.
