Mason Tuohy, 34, a well-known figure in regional water ski and jump teams, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, his family announced.
His mother, Mary Tuohy, said the coroner has ruled the death “natural” following a medical emergency, but the exact cause is not yet known as of the family’s update.
Tuohy’s life, his mother wrote, was defined by adventure. He traveled widely, followed hockey closely, and often brought his golden retriever, Gretzky, along.

“He may have only had 34 short years, but he didn’t waste a single second of it,” Mary wrote, adding that the family is working on memorial arrangements.
Sorrow Grief From The Community
His former teams and colleagues responded with shock and grief. Midwest Ski Otters, which named Tuohy their Jump Captain during the 2021 season, praised his energy, coaching, and creativity, citing his leadership in the team’s jump performance, “Otter Space.”
The club noted that his influence continued to shape the jump program, including the team’s 2025 National Runner-Up finish.
Teammates and friends described him as generous, always up for an adventure, and someone who lifted younger jumpers.
Steven Ryan wrote, “I have the Absolute pleasure to get to work with him for the past 14 months. Even got to attend a hockey game with him and Mr. Larry. He will truly be missed.”
Ed Polito added, “I can not believe this news. I met Mason a few years back while working in California with him on a project. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tuohy Family during this time.”
Messages posted on social media and on the St. Theodore Catholic Elementary School page, where Mary is a kindergarten teacher, reflect a similar tone: one of disbelief, sorrow, and gratitude.

Comments from friends, former co-workers, and community members remember Tuohy as “kind,” “fun,” and a steady, positive presence.
Sammy Darbo wrote, “So sad! He was a great classmate! Always enjoyed watching him adventure the world! Such an inspiration! Thoughts and prayers to his family!”
The school has also asked the community to keep the Tuohy family in their thoughts and prayers, quoting Psalm 34:18 as a source of comfort for the family.
At this time, the family has not released details on a memorial service. Out of respect for the family’s privacy while arrangements are being finalized, those wishing to express condolences are encouraged to follow the family’s post.
