Tyler Herro and his two younger brothers have inherited their parents’ athleticism and love for basketball.
Miami Heat standout player Tyler Herro recently made headlines after bagging the title at the NBA All-Star Weekend’s Three-Point Contest held at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Highlights
- Tyler Herro’s parents both have an athletic background.
- His father, Chris, was his first basketball coach.
- Chris was unhappy and scared of Tyler’s friendship with former Miami Heat teammate Jimmy Butler.
He surpassed Buddy Hield and Darius Garland in the final round, winning with a spectacular shooting performance.
While Chris Herro Was Tyler’s Basketball Coach, Jennifer Herro Took Care Of His Dental Health
Miami Heat shooting guard Tyler Herro was born on January 20, 2000, to parents Christopher and Jennifer Herro.
Herro grew up alongside two younger brothers, Austin and Myles, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and they shared a passion for basketball.
However, the Herro brothers inherited this zeal for basketball through their parents, who were equally devoted to sports.
Born on July 11, 1968, Christopher Herro played basketball at Nathan Hale High School.
Chris was a passionate and talented basketball player who garnered scholarship offers from Florida State and Saint Louis.
Unfortunately, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during his first week of practice in his senior year.
Hence, this injury marked the end of his athletic career, and the league lost an enthusiastic basketball player.
Chris pursued a different career and eventually found purpose and meaning in a home service business, Superior Disposal.
According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Chris is a roofing and concrete contractor in the summer and a snow plow driver in the winter.
“Yeah, she would not be happy if I would have gotten one knocked out. She always fixes my teeth.”

Therefore, this demonstrates how hard Chris works for his children to provide a lovely and comfortable life.
Similarly, Tyler’s mother, Jennifer Herro, is a former athlete and lifelong runner. She ran track and cross country at George Nelson Tremper High School, Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Moreover, Jennifer is a dental hygienist. She encourages and supports his athletic endeavors and cares for his mental health.
Chris and Jennifer’s shared love for athletics brought them closer, and the couple married in 1999, creating a lovely family brimming with future basketball players.
Since Chris could not become a college player, he fulfilled his desire through his son, Tyler.

He coached Tyler throughout his childhood, becoming his first coach. Even though Chris was hard on his 6-year-old son, the outcome was as fruitful as he had envisioned.
“That’s who you are. You’re my kid. The kid who, when Dad asks if you know what you’re getting yourself into, simply says with a wink and a grin, “Watch this.” We love you, Ty.”

Hence, Tyler received scholarship offers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marquette University, DePaul University, Oregon State University, and Arizona State University while still in high school.
Jennifer was scared of her husband’s strictness toward their son. However, eventually, everything fell perfectly into place after Tyler’s NBA selection.
Tyler And Jimmy’s Deepening Friendship Worried His Dad Chris
While Tyler is grateful to his father, Chris, his overprotectiveness and overinvolvement infuriated the NBA player once.
After the Miami Heat selected Tyler in the 2019 NBA draft, he started training with Jimmy Butler in July.

Chris wanted to ensure his son was in a good situation since he had heard about Butler’s reputation and prickly personality.
“As a parent, you hear stories about Jimmy and you just want to make sure he’s OK.”

However, Tyler and Jimmy’s friendship deepened after their rendezvous in Chicago and early morning workouts in Miami before the start of the Heat’s training camp last year.

Tyler dismissed his father’s concerns, snapping back in a text, saying:
“Dad, you gotta stop texting me. Jimmy is a good dude.”

Hence, Herro and Butler played critical roles in helping the Heat to the NBA Finals for the first time in six seasons.
However, Chris’ concern was also not wrong. In January 2025, the Heat suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games due to detrimental conduct. The team subsequently traded him to the Golden State Warriors.
Nevertheless, Herro still has respect and love for Butler. When asked about the latest Butler development, he told the reporters:
“It’s probably not the easiest to work with someone who’s going to be in and out in any job. We love Jimmy; we’d love for him to be here. I love Jimmy.”
