Joey Lochner, a longtime pillar in local youth sports, recently faced a daunting challenge: a 7.5-hour brain surgery to remove a tumor, his second since a 2022 diagnosis.
Lochner, known for his tireless dedication to developing young athletes across Gas City, Upland, and Van Buren, particularly at Eastbrook Panther Athletics has spent years mentoring kids on and off the court, shaping not only athletes but also young people in the community.
“I honestly never knew how long Joey had been battling this,” one supporter wrote. “He has NEVER STOPPED! He’s been a huge part of developing our youth for years. Joey, God’s got you brother!”
Messages of support, prayers, and encouragement have flooded social media, with friends and families echoing sentiments like “Prayers” and “Sending prayers!!”
Meal Train Has Started to Support the Coach
To help the Lochner family focus on Joey’s healing, a Meal Train has been set up. It was organized by Brooke Richardson, with Joey Lochner and Family being the receipients.
Supporters can provide meals to a family of six, two adults and four children, who avoid seafood and mushrooms. Also, you can volunteer furing any day that suits you the best.
Meals can be dropped off at 413 Main St, Upland, IN, around 5:30 p.m. Those interested can sign up using the Meal Train link provided in community posts.
Joey’s commitment to his players has remained unwavering, even in the face of personal health struggles.
Reflecting on a recent youth travel team season, he said, “All but one family chose not to return. My upcoming procedure was weighing on me. The smiles from this group in one weekend made it all worth it!”
From cheering for the Dukes on game day to mentoring girls on the travel team, Joey’s influence is evident in the community’s response.
Families continue to rally, not just with meals, but with heartfelt messages: “Thank you for giving our baller another chance to prove herself,” one parent wrote. “The growth she’s made this last year is incredible. Joey, you’ve done a wonderful job.”
As Lochner recovers in January, the community’s support reflects the impact he has had on countless young athletes and the difference a dedicated coach can make both on the court and in life.
