Jon Gruden’s Email Scandal, Which Prompted Him to Leave The Raiders’ Head Coach
The NFL discovered emails involving Raiders coach Jon Gruden from 2010 to 2018, in which he used inappropriate words.
Gruden used racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic language in the emails, which the Times alleges range from 2010 to 2018.
Those were before the Raiders hired him for his second term with the organization. According to the New York Times, he frequently called NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a “f—t” and a “clueless anti-football p—y.”
He also made homophobic remarks against NFL owners, coaches, and reporters who cover the league.
Gruden later attempted to retract his words, claiming that he used the term “rubber lips” to refer to someone who lies.
He apologized for such statements on Sunday, less than 24 hours before the release of additional derogatory emails.
Gruden also reportedly exchanged emails with Allen and others with photographs of women wearing only bikini bottoms.
According to reports, two Washington Football Team cheerleaders appeared in one snap.
Gruden and Allen sometimes included Ed Droste, the co-creator of Hooters; Jim McVay, an executive who has handled the Outback Bowl; and Nick Reader, the founder of PDQ Restaurants, in their communications.
Shortly after the revelation, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and ESPN’s Adam Schefter claimed that Gruden had informed his team that he will quit as head coach.
