He compiled a 104-35-4 record over two separate tenures as head football coach at USC, winning a national championship with the Trojans in 1978.

His 104 wins put him in third place among school all-time winners behind John McKay and Howard Jones.

In 12 seasons at USC, he never had a losing season. His first team, in 1976, went 11-1 and won the Rose Bowl, finishing No. 2 in the AP poll.

After dipping to 8-4 i1977, John put together a two-year run of 23-1-1 in 1978-79, winning two more Rose Bowls and a national championship, as designated by the coaches’ poll in 1978.

He became a consultant with LSU and was present for the Tigers’ national title in 2019. Overall, he finished with an 8-1 record in bowl games over 18 seasons as a head coach.

John Alexander Robinson started his coaching career at the University of Oregon, where he served as an assistant coach under Len Casanova and Jerry Frei from 1960 to 1971.

In 1976, when John McKay left USC to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, John was named to succeed him.

John spent several seasons in radio and television broadcasting and returned to the sidelines in 1983 with USC. Two years later, he was hired to coach football at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

In 2003, he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. Despite being relieved of duty as an athletic director, he resigned after going 2-9 in his final season in 2004.

He returned to coaching as defensive coordinator at San Marcos High School in San Marcos, California, in 2010, having never coached at the high school level.

In July 2019, he joined the LSU football program as a senior consultant to head coach Ed Orgeron and remained in that position through the 2021 season.
