Steven Oleksy’s Parents Knew He Would Excel At Everything He Would Choose For Future
Andy Oleksy, Steven Oleksy’s father, initially thought his son would play baseball better than hockey.
Steven, from Chesterfield, Michigan, had always played both sports and even spent a season playing baseball at Macomb Community College before earning a scholarship to Oakland University in Detroit.
However, his path changed when he was drawn to play for the Traverse City North Stars in the NAHL after meeting coaches Stapleton and Scott Gardiner.
Throughout his journey, Steven leaned heavily on his family and coaches, but the road to success in hockey wasn’t always easy.
Andy Oleksy, a self-employed electrical contractor, was attending a doctor’s appointment when his son Steve dropped a news about his NHL debut.
Steve casually told him, “You might as well keep driving,” leaving Andy stunned. Andy ended the call after calling his wife Sue, who was just as skeptical, urging her to speak with Steve directly.
It wasn’t until Mother Sue saw the news ticker on the NHL Network that she realized the news was confirmed.
Wanting to be there for Steve’s big moment, Andy, Sue, their other son, Daniel, and Daniel’s girlfriend, Nikki, drove over 10 hours to Washington to witness Steve’s debut with the Washington Capitals.
They left at 12:30 a.m. and ensured they were there for his first game, even though it was against the Boston Bruins.
Looking back, Steve was incredibly grateful for the support from his parents, who had been there for him through everything.
After the game, the family barely had a chance to rest, getting only two hours of sleep at Steve’s apartment before returning home.
Sue described the experience as unforgettable and expressed how amazing it was to be there for Steve’s debut.
Before Steve made it to the NHL, his parents knew he was exceptional as a hockey player and in his business ventures.
In 1998, Steve founded Eastside Hockey Elite, a summer program for local hockey players in the Detroit area.
While in the minors, he ran the organization, offering training, leagues, and tournaments for pro, college, and junior players. This side project helped him financially when he struggled in the minor leagues.
