Rafael credits his father for teaching him how to play baseball. His father was a standout outfielder during an era when Dominican ballplayers received little recognition from Major League scouts.
The Atlanta Braves signed him as an amateur free agent on November 9, 1996, and he played professionally as a second baseman with the Gulf Coast Braves in 1997.
Likewise, he played with the Danville Braves, where he was named Danville’s Player of the Year and Appalachian League All-Star Second Baseman.
Later, Rafael made a jump from the “A” ball to the Major League roster and made his Major League debut against the Colorado Rockies on April 4, 2000.
He signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on December 7, 2005, where he was selected as the inaugural winner of the Roy Campanella Award.
The Dodgers traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals on July 30, 2011, and he helped the Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers, winning his only World Series ring in 2011.
Furthermore, he played for the Miami Marlins and Kansas City Royals before announcing his retirement on May 19, 2015.
I tried to play around because one of the guys kind of asked me ‘What do you want to do now?’ I said ‘maybe retire,’ but that’s not going to happen. I can still play. I’m only 33.

Rafael Furcal Arrested Following Alleged Road Rage Incident
Rafael Furcal turned himself in at Broward County jail on Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was quickly released on bond but faces serious charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a missile into a dwelling.
According to Sunrise police, the incident occurred behind a Publix supermarket on West Sunrise Boulevard.
Authorities said Rafael and another man nearly collided in the parking lot, leading to a heated confrontation.
The former athlete allegedly threw rocks at the victim’s work truck, striking him and causing injury. The victim reported chasing him and punching him before Rafael fled the scene in his truck.
However, Rafael’s attorney Orlando Rodriguez claims the former athlete was the actual victim of a road rage attack.
He asserted that Rafael was unarmed and acted in self-defense after being assaulted with a box cutter. He described the rock as an improvised defensive tool used to fend off an immediate threat.
Moreover, Rodriguez emphasized Rafael’s cooperation with authorities and announced that a private investigator had been hired to locate video evidence of the altercation.
Mr. Furcal is anxious to clear his name and restore his reputation. He looks forward to a thorough review of the facts and is confident that the truth will prevail.
