A talented athlete, dedicated teacher, and proud veteran, Dr. Sterling Oline “Bud” Benson tragically passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 95.
He bid farewell to this world peacefully at home, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Sterling Benson Dedicated His Life To Education, Athletics, And Community Service!
Born on March 2, 1930, Benson was a standout multi-sport athlete at Luther Academy and Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska.
Known as a star athlete, he played both football in offensive and defensive roles and basketball for six years.
He was known for his teamwork and determination, earning the respect of coaches and teammates.
Apart from athletic endeavors, Benson served in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart.
Later, he returned to complete his undergraduate degree at Bethany College in Kansas in 1975.
It has been noted that he paid for his senior high school by working in the cafeteria.
During that time, he led the Elementary Education Department, building a teacher education program that became a model for the entire state of Kansas.

Under his leadership, Bethany College earned national recognition while completing two NCATE accreditation reviews.
Additionally, from 1986 to 1988, he served as President of the Kansas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (KACTE).
For his contributions and dedication, Sterline was honored with Alumni Awards of Merit from Luther College, Bethany College, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Teachers College.
He was also a member of academic and professional organizations such as Phi Delta Kappa and Pi Sigma Chi, reflecting his commitment to education and leadership.
While working alongside students and colleagues, he earned both his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
After retiring, Benson and his beloved wife Louise spent 15 winters in Costa Rica.
They travelled the world and were deeply involved in community work, especially at Messiah Lutheran Church.
It is reported that Benson washed pots for the summer lunch program until his final years.

Following his passing, family members and people across the community have begun sharing condolences on social media.
Many are saying how deeply Bud Benson touched their lives. They are calling him “a one-in-a-million mentor,” “a man of faith and kindness,” and “someone whose legacy will never be forgotten.”
Benson is survived by their six children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
On the contrary, he was preceded by his wife of 69 years, Louise, his parents, Rev John and Ruth, and other family members.
On Saturday, August 30, 2025, there will be a Celebration of Life service at Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, Kansas.
