Born on July 10, 1946, McCarthy grew up in South Boston as the youngest of four sons to William and Lillian (Greene) McCarthy.
His early years in “Southie” were filled with entrepreneurial spirit, selling daily newspapers.
McCarthy’s educational journey took him from Boston Latin to Weymouth High School after his family relocated.
He graduated from Holy Cross in 1969 with a degree in Classics.
His professional life began at Billerica, where he would find both his calling and his life partner.
As an English teacher at Billerica High School and Marshall Middle School, McCarthy earned a reputation as an exceptional educator.
He championed all students, regardless of their academic inclinations, and extended his influence beyond the classroom as the assistant coach of the New England Girls’ Outdoor Track Champions and timekeeper for school basketball and volleyball games.
After a brief battle with cancer, McCarthy passed away on February 10 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education and family.

Today, Carlotta carries forward Peter’s legacy, supported by their extended family, including Peter’s brother Paul and his wife Patricia (Walsh), brother-in-law Anthony Masiello, and their beloved niece Gina Osborne, along with numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by Peter’s generous spirit and zest for life.
At Peter’s request, his funeral services remained private, with arrangements handled by the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home of Andover, allowing Carlotta and family to celebrate his life intimately, just as they had shared it together for over half a century.
