Cam Newton (Panthers)
6'5, 245 lbs
Cam's fantasy season is going to come down to his health. When he was healthy last year he was playing efficient football and providing nice fantasy numbers. The problem is he had arthroscopic shoulder surgery and has also suffered a foot sprain in the third preseason game. Last year in 14 games he had 3395 passing yards with 24 TDs and 13 INTs and added 488 rushing yards and 4 TDs.
Cam's 67.9 completion percentage was by far the highest of his career, and his 242 passing yards-per-game was his second-highest. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner stresses getting the ball out quickly and Carolina has weapons that can run after the catch. Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, and Curtis Samuel can all help get Cam some easy yards.
Newton is 30 years old now and he's taken too many hits, but his rushing stats are what makes him so good in fantasy. When he was healthy through the first 8 games, his passer rating was over 100 and he had 15 TDs. Then he got banged up and his fantasy numbers tumbled. Again his health will be key.
He's been one of the best in fantasy for a long time and offers a high ceiling if you can get all 16 games from him. If you do draft him, you should draft a backup QB to hedge your bet.
