Growing up in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Mitchell wasn’t the kid everyone expected to go pro. However, it was his mother who saw something early.
In an interview with the Bengals, Veronica shared how Mitchell, even as a kindergartener, was obsessed with football.
Mitchell memorized his favourite player, Jerry Rice’s stats, watched Reggie Bush highlights religiously, and had such tunnel vision for the game.
Because he was obsessed with football, his mother set rules when he was little.
He said that his mother, Veronica, wouldn’t let him watch ESPN highlights of his favorite player, Reggie Bush, before school because he’d get too distracted and forget to eat breakfast.
“No ESPN before school,” she told him, making sure he stayed focused on the basics, like eating breakfast and getting ready for kindergarten.
In the same interview, Mitchell acknowledged how his mother has started to talk like a scout and get interested in football.
She didn’t know much about football back then, but now she has learned enough to “sound like a scout.” He said:
She’ll say things like Your release off the line looked sharper today. She’s really into it now.

Above all, Veronica has been supportive of his football career and doesn’t just watch from afar.
She has been hands-on, even moving to Cincinnati to live with Mitchell during the NFL season to support him.
