Kellen Moore

Use Caution On The Kellen Moore Hype Train

The off-season continues to roll on and the Dallas Cowboys are in the middle of OTA’s. It’s hard to get too excited about practices in shorts and without real hitting going on, but that hasn’t stopped the hype train from going full-steam ahead. This off-season, Kellen Moore is all the rage for the Cowboys.

The hype for Moore right now is real, and it’s spectacular.

It began with Moore talking about being “multiple,” while using different formations and motion on offense. He then mentioned using all the window dressing to get speed on the field and not running anything complicated, but using it to confuse the defense. Running simple plays from various formations, ala the Rams under Sean McVay.

No one will confuse the two offenses, yet, but the point was clear; the Cowboys will not be as simple to defend as they were under Scott Linehan. Gone will be the predictability of the offense and in comes some creativity.

A former teammate of Moore’s with the Lions and now analyst Dan Orlovsky described some of what he expects from the Cowboys’ offense and it was music to fan's ears.

“I think it’s going to be an offense that is like Sean Payton married with Matt Nagy married with Mike Leach. Like they all had a baby and that’s what this offense is going to be.” - Dan Orlovsky

That’s a lot of offensive creativity and three very successful offensive-minded coaches. Payton and Nagy led top 10 offenses last season Leach has long been considered one of the best in college football. Still, the breakdown is rather vague, luckily Orlovsky embellished:

“I just expect this offense to be constantly changing what it looks like before the snap. And then there’s going to be some college aspect to it, I promise you because Kellen’s background at Boise State. There will be some spread, four wide receiver, I would anticipate Dak being used as a runner more. I don’t know if it’s going to be an all-out thing, but third downs and red zone situationally stuff. That’s why there’s a lot of intrigue to it because what happens if Kellen Moore is really able to tap into who Dak is and all of his skills?”

If this is true, the offense will look much different in 2019 than when Linehan was running the show. Moore could be bringing some of the new NFL offense to the Cowboys to take advantage of their skills players.

Talk is one thing, but execution is another. Everything sounds great right now and looks good in practice, but what matters is what happens when the games come around. How does Moore react and call plays in the heat of the battle?

There is a lot to like about what Moore wants to do, about the speed of the Cowboys on offense and their expected creativity. However, let’s temper our expectations until we see the offense in a game situation.

Everything is great in June, let’s hope that transforms into good results in September. It’s all coming up aces right now for Kellen Moore.
