Brandon’s first daughter, Karli Short, passed away in “a senseless act of gun violence” on September 13, 2021.
She was declared deceased at the scene after being shot in the head shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Karli was just 26 year-old when she perished, and she was preparing to give birth to her son.
As a result, the parents lost both their daughter and their grandson, who was due to arrive.
Karli Short’s father, Brandon, described her as courageous and inspiring, the type of person who was driven to improve the lives of others.
Like her father, Karli Short grew up and was raised in McKeesport. She cheered for the White Oak Falcons and played basketball at the McKeesport YMCA.
His daughter studied cosmetology and worked as a caretaker at various local assisted living institutions.
She was a soon-to-be mother who had planned a Harry Potter-themed gender reveal party.
Brandon and his wife established a nonprofit to honor their daughter and assist others facing similar challenges.
They founded the Karli Short Better Tomorrow Foundation to provide financial aid to college students affected by gun violence.
The organization will first establish a scholarship endowment at Penn State Greater Allegheny in Short’s hometown of McKeesport.
Short established the foundation in McKeesport and Penn State Greater Allegheny because that is where he started.
It initially focused on financial funding but also provided education and mentorship opportunities. Short coached several of the program’s early participants.
