Biff Poggi, an American football coach and former player, is in the spotlight for his fired news as a head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

He has been with his supportive wife, Amy Poggi, for over 3 decades, and they have four children.

Highlights

  • Biff Poggi met Amy at Duke University and shared a fulfilling marriage spanning over three decades.
  • The married couple has established the Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award.
  • They have five children and their three sons followed in his fathers footstep, pursuing career in football.

Head coach, Francis Xavier “Biff” Poggi’s tenure at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, ended in the mid-second season.

He was the third head coach at the University and the fifth coach in the AAC to be fired this year. Tim Brewster will replace him as the team’s interim coach for the rest of the season.

Biff joined the Charlotte 49ers in November 2022 and got his first win as an NCAA head coach against South Carolina St. in his first game.

However, he only won 6 games and lost 16 in his two seasons. He won three games in a single season in his head coaching job in college football.

Charlotte 49ers was officially eliminated from bowl contention, which marked his departure from the University with two games remaining in the 2024 season.

Furthermore, he coached at the Gilman School from 1996 to 2015 and joined Saint Frances Academy from 2017 to 2020.

He worked three seasons as an off-field analyst under head coach Jim Harbaugh for the Michigan Wolverines.

Biff Poggi And His Wife Have A Close-Knit Family

Football coach Biff Poggi met Amy at Duke University and shared a fulfilling marriage spanning over three decades.

They have built a solid supportive relationship and welcomed five children, 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Biff was teaching European history before starting a career as a hedge fund manager with his father-in-law.

His company, Samuel James Limited, was founded in 1986 and valued at hundreds of millions three decades later.

He and his wife funded $2.5 million of their own money to rejuvenate the Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore. They covered teachers’ salaries, tuition, scholarships, and housing for their players and staff.

Moreover, the married couple has established the Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award.

Biff is famous for wearing cutoff shirts on the sidelines at games, and Amy remembers the first time her husband wore one.

It was during St. Frances Academy of Baltimore’s 2019 season opener at Central High School on a televised game.

She thought he had a polo shirt in his bag because other coaches were wearing polo shirts and saw him in that cutoff shirt on ESPN.

I thought to myself, ‘Oh no. What did they think of his wife letting him go off looking like that?’ But if they knew him, they would understand it. You just don’t tell Biff, ‘Hey, don’t do that.’ It sometimes can backfire.

Amy Poggi has mentioned.

UNC Charlotte chancellor Sharon Gaber and athletic director Mike Hill asked Biff’s assistant to make sure he didn’t wear one in public when they saw him wearing a cutoff T-shirt during a news conference.

Later, hearing the request, he wore them in practices, news conferences, and even in the official team photo.

Amy’s role has been crucial in Biff’s journey, and they have built a family that values personal and professional growth.

Biff Poggi’s Children Followed Their Passion In Athletic Career

Biff had an opportunity to coach his children, leading them to be true sportsmen on the most prestigious collegiate teams.

The college head coach played a pivotal role in passing coaching and social skills to his children.

His sons, Henry, Sam, and Jim, walked in his footsteps and pursued a football career.

Henry is a formidable football fullback, and Sam played college football for Duke University and the University of Michigan.

Sam serves as the D-line coach at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and has had the opportunity to coach his brother Henry and his friend Melvin Keihn.

He began his coaching career as a defensive lines coach at Gilman School, a renowned boys’ school in Maryland.

Similarly, Jim has become one of Maryland’s most promising high school football prospects at Gilman School.

He enrolled at the University of Iowa over scholarship offers from more than 20 prestigious institutions.

Similarly, the eldest daughter, Mellie, pursued her education at the UMD Medical School in Baltimore and married her long-time boyfriend, Tom.

However, there is little information about their other daughter Mary Poggi.

Biff and Amy Poggi are grandparents to six grandchildren.
