Austin High School Coach David Lueking Dies at 82, Leaving a Lasting Legacy in Coaching and Education

In 2024, David was inducted into the Oakland City College Hall of Fame.

Longtime boys’ basketball head coach David Lueking has passed away, leaving behind a decades-long legacy for his children and the Austin community.

David Lueking devoted nearly four decades to education and basketball coaching in Indiana, primarily at Austin High School.

Early in his career, he coached at Vincennes Lincoln High School, later leading South Knox High School to back-to-back sectional titles in 1976 and 1977.

Later, he became head coach at Austin High from 1983 until his retirement in 1996.

When he retired, he was the winningest basketball coach in Austin High School (the “Austin Eagle”) history.

Under his leadership, the basketball program won two sectional championships, a regional title, and nine conference championships.

Austin Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Coach David Lueking!

Born on January 17, 1943, David Lueking, also known as Dave, dedicated several decades of his life to teaching and coaching.

After a full and meaningful life of 82 years, Dave passed away on November 13, 2025, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the Indiana basketball community.

David loved sports, but he was just as passionate about teaching in the classroom.

He was licensed in eleven subjects and enjoyed teaching government, history, psychology, and sociology.

He often shared stories from his years as a physical education and driver’s education teacher.

David guided his students beyond academics, helping them build discipline and strong character.

In 2004, he was honored as an Indiana State Teacher of the Year by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

His death has indeed brought grief to his family, and the entire Austin community is mourning the loss.

Following his passing, many have shared their sorrow in Facebook posts and comments. One person on Facebook wrote:

He was such a good soul. I’ve never heard anyone say anything negative about himy. RIP Coach. Prayers for his family as they maneuver thru this difficult time.

While many have kept David in their memories, he is survived by his two children, Mark and Mandy, with whom he shared his life with his wife, Janis. His wife, Janis, preceded him in death.

Visitation was held at Buchanan Funeral Home, Austin, Indiana, on Saturday, November 22, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The memorial service followed at the same location from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm.

As the family mourns their loss, we extend our heartfelt condolences to David’s friends, family, and all those who have shown well-wishes.
