Alabama High school football player Semaj Wilkins’ was survived by his loving and caring mother, Regena Johnson-Adam.

According to the Coffee County Coroner’s Office, the reason behind the passing of an Alabama high school football player who collapsed during a practice has been revealed.

A 14-year-old freshman, Semaj Wilkins, suffered a medical emergency during football practice on August 13, 2024, at New Brockton High School.

According to the coroner’s report, Wilkins collapsed and was unresponsive before being taken to an area hospital.

On Thursday, an autopsy determined that his cause of passing was congestive heart failure due to cardiomegaly with biventricular hypertrophy.

Coroner Arnold Woodham said Semaj’s passing was ruled natural and said his thoughts and prayers remain with the Wilkins family during this difficult time.

Coffee County Schools Superintendent Kelly Cobb poured a tribute through Facebook handle writing,

“Semaj was a young man who brought joy and inspiration to his peers, teammates, coaches, and faculty members. His loss will be deeply felt by everyone who knew him,”

The coroner also supported New Brockton High School and thanked the New Brockton Fire Department, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, and New Brockton Police Department for their swift response and care.

Semaj Dewayne Wilkins was born in 2010 in the United States to his mother, Regena Johnson-Adam.

Regena said that her son Semaj was one of the most caring and outgoing people she had ever met.

According to Regena, Semaj was a sports fanatic who loved baseball and basketball but gravitated most to the gridiron football. Semaj used to say,

 ‘No, I want to go out for football. Mama, I can hit ‘EM, I can hit ‘EM.’…He just had a love for sports, period.”

However, Regena had never expected that the game her son loved so much would cause his untimely d*ath.

On the day of the incident, Adams said that she got a phone call notifying her of what happened, but she didn’t know what to think. She said,

“I panicked. I grabbed everything I could think of and ran out…And I got to that field, and I was devastated because they wouldn’t let me get to my baby,”

“At this time, I know that my son was healthy,” “It was probably something that we missed. You never know because we do have underlying health problems in our family.”

On Semaj’s 15th birthday, Regena organized a balloon release event at John Henderson Park’s ball field on September 18, 2024.

However, Semaj’s father has stayed away from the public media. His father insisted on his love for sports.

Although Semaj Wilkins and his entire family lived in the United States, his ancestors have a deep-rooted history with Africa.

Wilkins and his family celebrated American and African culture and festivals. He was living with his family in Enterprise, Alabama.

Semaj’s family is receiving heartfelt condolence from the close and loved ones following his tragic demise at a young age.

His family also includes a brotherBizzie Cow, who attended Wilcoz Central High School and lives in Troy, Alabama.

According to his Facebook bio, Bizzie is originally from Camden, Alabama.
