Jelena Dokic was born on 12 April 1983 in Osijek, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. She was the eldest daughter of her Serbian father, Damir Dokić, and her Croatian mother, Ljiljana Podnar.
The former player lived her first seven years in Osijek, Croatia, and later moved to Sombor, Serbia, due to the instability caused by the breakup of Yugoslavia.
