While playing for the Boston Red Sox in 1975, he earned around $185,000. When the Mexico City Tigers signed him in 1959, he was paid around $150 per month.
At the end of the summer of 1961, Cleveland purchased Luis’ contract for $35,000 on Avila’s recommendation.
The Red Sox once offered him a one-year contract for $250,000, but he wanted a longer-term deal for security, so he opted for free agency.

Luis Tiant debuted in MLB for the Cleveland Indians with a four-single, 11-strikeout, 3-0 shutout victory against the New York Yankees on July 19, 1964.
After an injury-plagued season with the Indians in 1969, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins in a multi-player deal that brought Dean Chance and 3rd baseman Graig Nettles to Cleveland.

He played his first match in 1970 and won six matches, but then he fractured his right scapula, ending his season.
After being dropped by the Twins in spring training of 1971, the Atlanta Braves signed him to a minor league contract to play with their Triple-A minor league Richmond team.
At the end of the 1978 season, Luis signed as a free agent with the New York Yankees.
He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a free agent in 1981. He pitched in just nine games and went 2-5 with a 3.92 ERA.
Luis ended his career with a bride stint with the California Angels in 1982, pitching in 6 games and going 2-2 with a 5.76 ERA.
