Former NFL Reporter Kayla Burton Made Her Athletic Parents Virginia And Steve Proud With Her Achievement

Kayla Burton’s father, Steve Burton, played as a starting quarterback for Northwestern University before finding his niche in news broadcasting.

Burton didn’t jump into Journalism fully after graduation. She first gained some experience as the head coach for the Rivers School elementary girls’ basketball team, along with a position as a substitute teacher.

In 2021, Kayla decided to give basketball a break. She joined the NFL Network as an Anchor/Reporter, interviewed star players like Maxx Crosby, and covered stories like Deshaun Watson’s disciplinary action, Drake’s injury, and Title IX’s 50 celebrations.

She joined NBC Sports Boston in July 2024 and contributed her multiplatform experience with various existing content, shows, and new network initiatives.  

Kayla Burton Was Raised By Her Sports Enthusiast Parents

Former NFL reporter Kayla Burton, 30, was born in 1995 to her father, Steve Burton, and her mother, Ginni Burton.

Kayla’s parents encouraged her to have a strong interest in sports. She was often made to wake up at 5 a.m. to train at their church or school gym.

Her father, Steve, is the Sports Director for WBZ-TV and WSBK-TV in Boston. He is the son of former Boston Patriots player Ron Burton.

Steve grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts, and is a Northwestern University graduate and former quarterback. He holds a bachelor of science degree in Communications and a master’s in Broadcast journalism.

He spends time working at the Ron Burton Training Village, a 5-week sports camp for inner city youths.

That organization awarded him the MIAA/Ron Burton Community Service Award.

He also serves on the boards of several children’s charities, including the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Kayla’s mother, Ginni, aka Virginia, was a Northwestern swimmer who qualified for the Olympic time trials.

She is a certified lifeguard and gives all the Ron Burton Training Village camper’s swimming lessons.

Kayla Burton Grew Up Along With Her Three Siblings

Kayla Burton has three siblings: Kendall, Austin, and Veronica.

Her sister Kendall, 31, was born on July 1, 1993, and played NCAA Division 1 basketball for Villanova University.

Kayla’s second sister Veronica, 24, who was born on July 12, 2000, is also a professional basketball player for the Golden State Valkyries of the Women’s National Basketball Association and the Bendigo Spirit of the Women’s National Basketball League.

She also represented the United States at the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmericCup and won a gold medal.

Her brother Austin graduated from UCLA and is currently a quarterback for the Purdue Boilermakers.

In high school, Scout.com listed him as a four-star prospect and the No. 7 quarterback in Florida.
