Stefan Alexander Mendes-Monteiro, a 33-year-old Airman First Class in the United States Air Force and former standout soccer player at Tewksbury Memorial High School, tragically lost his life in a car accident on January 27, 2025— his birthday.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. at a rest area on Interstate 495 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, where Stefan’s Toyota RAV4 collided with the rear of a parked tractor-trailer.

Authorities noted that he was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. He was the sole occupant.

Born To Parents Susana And Joe, Stefan Showed Great Potential In Soccer From A Young Age

Born on January 27, 1992, in Boston, Stefan was the son of Susana (Mendes) Monteiro and Joe Monteiro.

He spent his early years in Medford, Massachusetts, before the family relocated to Tewksbury when he was ten.

Stefan’s passion for soccer was evident from a young age; he traveled with his father to Denmark, England, and Sweden to compete, showcasing his talent on international stages.

His dedication to the sport earned him a spot on the Tewksbury Town Crier’s All-Decade Soccer Team.

In addition to soccer, Stefan excelled in track and field, particularly in the high jump event.

Throughout his life, Stef was a gifted athlete and most recently a promising airman on his way to a promising career with the Air Force. He had a one-of-a kind sense of humor and loved making people laugh by imitating funny voices. Stefan loved golfing and snowboarding with the best of his friends. He enjoyed playing Xbox late-night whenever he could. Stefan was an avid reader of articles, constantly seeking out news & information and educating himself on a wide variety of topics. He was always ready for a good debate and loved a good conspiracy theory.

Stefan Enlisted In The U.S. Air Force In May 2024

After graduating from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 2011, Stefan pursued higher education in business at Nichols College in Dudley and Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts.

His athletic prowess continued to shine during his college years.

In May 2024, Stefan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a Cyber Defense Operator stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas.

He quickly made a positive impact on his peers and superiors, volunteering for the Air Force Recruiters Assistance Program to bolster military recruitment efforts.
